Despite cautious optimism from teammates and superiors, it seems the soonest we’ll see Jason Witten on the field is Week 2.
According to ESPN’s Ed Werder, the Cowboys tight end, who suffered a lacerated spleen this preseason, is “extremely unlikely” to play in Wednesday’s regular season opener against the Giants. The team considers the injury to be of the 4-6 week variety.
Witten reportedly will undergo another scan on Tuesday to get a clearer indication of his progress.
Dallas will have eleven days to prepare for a late-game tilt in Seattle on September 16. The extra time obviously should work to the 30-year-old’s advantage, assuming he’s on pace in his recovery.
Owner Jerry Jones recently expressed optimism regarding Witten’s availability, saying it’s “not impossible” to think he could suit up against the division rival Giants. Ditto quarterback Tony Romo, who believes he’ll “probably” have his favorite target in tow.
It doesn’t appear to be, however.
