Bears QB Jay Cutler mentioned on Wednesday that he doesn’t expect to have a contract extension in place before the start of the upcoming season. “We’re upgrading in certain positions and I don’t think we’re really in position to do my deal. But like I said, (general manager Phil Emery) has a plan worked out, so we’ll just have to see what happens.” Cutlers said on ESPN 1000 AM, via ESPNChicago.com. “But I’m perfectly comfortable in the situation I’m in, and if we go into it with just this last year, then so be it. I’ll play it out and we’ll see what happens at the end of the year.” Cutler added that he would love to stay with the Bears. Following his trade to the Bears back in 2009, Cutler and the team negotiated a contract during the season, which is something that he’s said he would never do again. He’ll be entering the final year of his contract and is in a great position to secure a decent pay raise, now that price for starting quarterbacks has increased considerably. Thankfully for him, the Bears have already grabbed a left tackle in Jermon Bushrod and upgraded the tight end position with the signing of Martellus Bennett. Cutler will still have to learn a new system now that they’ve hired Mark Trestman, but Chicago is clearly focused on putting Cutler in the best possible position to succeed.
