While the champion New York Giants have lost more talent than they have acquired, the teams they beat to get their title have not.

The Green Bay Packers had lost only one starting player, center Scott Wells. Signing five-time Pro Bowl center Jeff Saturday makes that loss negligible. Details of the deal have yet to be released.

At Saturday’s age, he is not a long-term answer. But his ability to call out protections and run a no-huddle offense (thank you to Rich Rogers, a commenter at the above link) should be great assets to the Packers.

Meanwhile, the San Francisco 49ers re-signed kick returner and fourth wide receiver Tedd Ginn, Jr. to a one-year deal. Financial details are yet to be announced. This keeps the Niners roster almost entirely intact. (They also signed backup quarterback Josh Johnson to a two-year deal.)

With the turmoil surrounding the New Orleans Saints (some players are certain to receive suspensions in addition to punishments already handed out to coaches), the competition in the toughest conference may be thinning. With these moves, the Packers and Niners stay in the driver’s seat.
