Speculation was rampant in last night’s first round that the Dallas Cowboys would select Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel if he was available when Dallas picked at No. 16. The belief was Manziel was simply too tempting for the Cowboys, more specifically Jerry Jones, to pass up. The Cowboys of course did pass on Manziel. The team ended up selecting Notre Dame offensive lineman Zack Martin. But, according to Charean Williams of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, Manziel was indeed the Cowboys No. 1 rated player on their draft board. Jerry admitted Manziel was the highest-rated player on the Cowboys’ draft board at No. 16. Just too much invested in Romo. — Charean Williams (@NFLCharean) May 10, 2014 The reason Manziel wasn’t the pick, according to Jones, is the gargantuan financial investment already committed to one Tony Romo. In March of last year, Romo signed a 6-year $108 million contract. Romo, though, is 34-years-old, and coming off a back surgery. Jones could’ve felt pressed to quickly draft his replacement, in a player he was clearly infatuated with, in Manziel. Especially after Cowboys legend Troy Aikman voiced his concern over Romo’s back injury in April. At the time, Aikman said, “I’m hopeful he’s able to come back–everybody is.
