Fans that were itching to see the Peyton and Eli Manning compete for the love of the Big Apple are going to be a little disappointed. The New York Jets effectively took themselves out of the running for the elder Manning’s services by giving their current quarterback, Mark Sanchez, a contract extension.

“To find out that I could come back for three more years means the world to me,” Sanchez said in a conference call. “I’m absolutely pleased to be a Jet. My family’s ecstatic and now it’s time to get to work.”

Sanchez, who had two years remaining on his current deal, signed a three-year extension for $40.5 million, $20.5 million of it guaranteed. When combined with the remaining two years on his current contract and with $10 million of potential salary escalators that Sanchez can reach, the Jets QB stands to make close to $70 million over the next five seasons.
