In an interview with the Jets' website, new offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg said something that likely raised a few eyebrows amongst Jets fans, saying, "Some of the great ones have really not thrown for such great accuracy. Steve Young was astronomical accuracy-wise. Brett Favre wasn’t. Brett Favre, I believe won an MVP two different times out of the three times that he won it, throwing 58, 59, 60 percent, somewhere in there. So they all come in different shapes and sizes." Yeah you read that correctly. Apparently, the Jets are the only team in the NFL that can succeed with an accurate passer. Luckily for them, they have an inaccurate passer in Mark Sanchez, who has never even come close to completing 60% of his passes in a season. To be fair to Mornhinweg, the question was difficult to field without alienating his own quarterback, and he did his best to answer in a diplomatic way. Earlier in that interview, he said, "Within the west coast it's, you know, timing,  accuracy, decision making, yards after the catch and playing fast and furious are all important." That statement may be more telling about how he plans to structure the Jets' offense moving forward. In all reality, despite saying otherwise, the Jets do need a quarterback that can complete passes consistently and keep the chains moving down the field. Mark Sanchez is not that guy, and he's shown little to no progression over the past couple of seasons. If nothing else, the Jets need to bring in a quarterback that can at least give Sanchez a challenger that could take over the starting role. Marty Mornhinweg is right, the west coast offense relies on timing, accuracy and decision making, none of which have been exhibited by Mark Sanchez in a long time. [follow]
