There was a report last week that 49ers QB Alex Smith will seek his release before free agency, which starts in March. On Tuesday, head coach Jim Harbaugh all but shot down the notion. “I don't think any player (asking for his release) has those wishes granted when they're under contract,” the coach said, according to Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee. “And everything's different. Every scenario is unique. It's certainly not something we're going to delve into and get into specifics.” The implication, of course, is that Smith is available via trade, and there are plenty of teams in search of a starting quarterback. The Browns, Jets and Cardinals are obvious choices, though we're too early in the process to have any real sense for how this plays out. Last week, 49ers CEO Jed York said there was room under the cap to keep Smith but didn't commit to bringing back the first-overall pick from the 2005 draft. "From a need standpoint? It's pretty nice to have two quarterbacks that you feel you can win with," York said. "Is there going to be a demand for a quarterback that's played as well as he has the last couple of years? Yeah. Does he want want to go start and play? So there are a lot of things that go into it. And we'll sit down after the Super Bowl and figure out what's best for everybody and how to move forward." Jim Harbaugh pushes photographer on his way to shake his brother’s hand (Video)

While trying to get to his brother fur a post-game handshake, 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh pushed a photographer out of the way. Harbaugh has certainly been involved in his share of controversies, especially after games. 49ers Coach Jim Harbaugh Won't Second-Guess Play Calls In Super Bowl Loss

Given about 40 hours to reflect, Jim Harbaugh would only acknowledge the obvious today: Why, yes, he wishes the 49ers had called a play that gained five yards during the last two minutes of the Super Bowl. Harbaugh, predictably, wasnÂ’t in the mood for public self-flagellation when asked about San FranciscoÂ’s much-scrutinized play-calling at the end of its 34-31 loss to the Ravens...

Champagne for John Harbaugh, whine for Jim Harbaugh

NEW ORLEANS -- For the two weeks since their teams earned the right to play in Super Bowl XLVII, brothers Jim and John Harbaugh knew the bitter reality: Someone was leaving New Orleans a loser. While elder John and his Baltimore Ravens get to spend a night on Bourbon Street partying with Lombardi, Jim's 49ers swallow a painful loss, the first in San Francisco's six trips...

The Pros and Cons for Alex Smith

Small hands and game manager. That's all I think of when Alex Smith comes to mind. I don't exactly think those two traits are compliments. The small hands stuff comes from Tony Kornheiser, who used to say that and it added to his fumbling problem early in his career. The poor guy fumbled 15 times during the first three years of his career, 9 of them coming his rookie...

49ers Head Coach Jim Harbaugh Has Issues Over Non-Calls

49ers coach Jim Harbaugh opened his post game press conference by saying he wanted to "handle this with class and grace," couldn't help but make his feelings known in a matter-of-fact fashion, Jerry McDonald of Bayareanewsgroup reports. Indeed, Harbaugh had issues with more than just the final play. On a second-down throw to Crabtree -- again with Smith as the defender...

49ers Coach Jim Harbaugh Says A 'Penalty Is A Penalty No Matter When It Occurs'

Given his inability to keep a straight face, Jim Harbaugh must be a horrible poker player. So it was hardly surprising when the 49ers coach told the media shortly after the Ravens' 34-31 Super Bowl win that he thought the officials missed a pass interference call on wide receiver Michael Crabtree that would've given the 49ers a first-and-goal with 1:50 to go in the game....

Did Jimmy Smith hold Michael Crabtree on Niners last play in Super Bowl?

The officiating crew for Super Bowl XLVII used their flags quite sparingly down the stretch, which many believe helped the Baltimore Ravens hold on to beat the San Francisco 49ers. On what turned out to be the Niners’ last drive of the game, Jim Harbaugh felt that the Ravens got away with pass interference on two plays. The first came on 2nd-and-goal, when Colin Kaepernick rolled...

Jim Harbaugh’s Play Calling Lacked Creativity, Which Led to 49ers’ Late-Game Letdown

The 49ers were nearly flawless throughout the second half of Super Bowl XLVII. But when push came to shove down near the goal line with the game on the line, they just couldn’t convert. Colin Kaepernick played brilliantly throughout the second half, hitting receivers in stride consistently and using the pistol offense to both his and Frank Gore‘s advantage.  Under his guidance...

Lights Out Ravens Win; Jim Harbaugh Sore in Loss

On Friday I stated the Ravens would win by 3 points in a close game. It sure didn’t start out that way, but it sure ended that way. It was a Super Bowl of firsts; a fake field goal, a 34 minute power outage in the 3rd quarter, and brother vs brother (John vs. Jim Harbaugh). The half time if anyone cared also saw the reunion of Destiny’s Child (Beyonce and her band mates Michelle...

Jim Harbaugh: A Man Who Rarely Gives An Answer, but Cuts The B.S.

While the Super Bowl XLVII Champion Ravens and their fans were celebrating both their recent win and the career of soon to be retired 17-year veteran Ray Lewis at M&T Bank Stadium, the 49ers were back at home trying to gather themselves following the devastating loss this past Sunday. The 49ers were down by 22 points in the third quarter but were able to rally together and fight...

John Harbaugh Says Brother Jim Harbaugh Is ‘Best Coach in NFL’

For the better part of a decade, Bill Belichick has been the consensus pick as the NFL’s best coach. But that title might be passing on, at least according to John Harbaugh. Harbaugh, who took home his first Super Bowl title with the Ravens’ 34-31 win over the 49ers on Sunday, isn’t putting himself on that pedestal, though. Instead, he’s talking up his younger brother, Jim...

A Fairy Tale world for Eagles QB's right now...

Once upon a time a magical prince became head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles. And all the fans in the kingdom wondered how many frogs he would have to kiss before one turned into his magic quarterback. Now the latest rumor has Chip Kelly interested in bringing Alex Smith to the Eagles. We've heard that one before. But now Garry Cobb is running with it.   Â...

San Francisco 49ers 2013 Needs

A lot is being made about the 4th and goal non-holding call by the referees that essentially ended the game. I don’t think it was necessarily a bad call. It was a borderline call and either team would have had a beef depending on the outcome of the call. Obviously it’s not the way you want a Super Bowl to be decided, but I don’t have an issue with it. At least the refs were...

49ers Block Saints' Request To Interview Ed Donatell For DC Job

The New Orleans Saints contacted the San Francisco 49ers in an attempt to interview secondary coach Ed Donatell for their vacant defensive coordinator position, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network and NFL.com. This according to a source with knowledge of the Saints' plans. However, Donatell is under contract with the 49ers, and the team made the decision not to permit the interview...
