EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. – Jerry Jones said he thought the Cowboys would advance to the playoffs right up until the final minutes of Sunday night’s 31-14 loss to the Giants. With the NFC East title at stake, the Cowboys fell behind 21-0 in the first half. They rallied to pull within 21-14 with about 10 minutes left in the game, but the Giants (9-7) scored 10 unanswered points in the final 5 minutes to advance to the playoffs as the NFC’s No. 4 seed. The Cowboys (8-8) finished third in the NFC East for the second straight season. “What is nothing to fool yourself about is that we’re 8-8,” Jones said. “We’ve got to do better than that. “We had an opportunity to step up here and win a ballgame and go into the playoffs that I thought we would win.
