Perhaps the most pressing need was stability at the quarterback position, which was taken care of with the acquisition of Alex Smith. This all but ruled out the possibility that the Chiefs will take a quarterback with the first pick, especially given the overall lack of perceived talent at the position in this year’s draft class. Another crucial task was to figure out what was going to happen at the left tackle position with pending free agent Brandon Albert. The Chiefs shelved that issue, at least for a year, by using the franchise tag on Albert.
