Kansas City Chiefs will probably be thrilled the NFL gave them the toughest possible season opener
Tommy Gilligan-USA TODAY Sports

The Kansas City Chiefs’ Week 1 opponent to start the 2024 season has been confirmed, and the NFL could not have given them a tougher opening to their latest Super Bowl defense.

Kansas City will face the Baltimore Ravens in the NFL season opener after hoisting the Super Bowl 58 Championship banner at Arrowhead Stadium.

It will serve as a rematch of last season’s AFC Championship Game that saw the Chiefs produce an outstanding defensive effort to knock off the one seed Ravens 17-10.

With the Ravens out for revenge in a matchup between reigning MVP Lamar Jackson and Patrick Mahomes coming off a third Super Bowl MVP performance, it promises to be a mouthwatering, and difficult, start to the campaign for the Chiefs.

But the Chiefs probably won't mind that.

Kansas City started last season with a similarly tough opener, which they lost to a Detroit Lions team that went all the way to the NFC Championship Game.

That sent the tone for an often frustrating regular season for Kansas City, but the Chiefs' struggles during that campaign also helped them be battle hardened for a postseason in which they won two road games and came from behind to defeat the San Francisco 49ers in overtime in the Super Bowl.

As such, a huge test against their main rivals in the AFC to knock the rust off is something Mahomes and Co. will welcome.

There's every chance the Ravens could march into Arrowhead and make a statement by prevailing in Week 1.

Regardless of outcome, though, the Chiefs will play the long game, and that tends to work out just fine.
