KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) -- Even while giving away free turkeys, the Kansas City Chiefs cannot escape the wrath of their suffering fans.
Wide receiver Dexter McCluster, while delivering a free turkey and canned goods to a humble home on Thanksgivng Day, got an unexpected scolding from an elderly woman.
"She put me in my place," McCluster said with a grin. "But she's a sweet lady. She meant well."
McCluster said he hadn't even had time to put away the groceries before the woman, who lives alone, let him have it.
"She said, I'm praying for you guys. Hopefully you guys can win a game soon,'" he recalled. "I told her we're working hard. She said, Well, work harder.'
"I thanked her and told her there's always room for prayer. She told me she had lived in that house for 52 years."
Fan anger has been building all season against the Chiefs, who will be looking for their first home win Sunday when they host Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos.
Planes have flown over Arrowhead Stadium before games trailing banners that urge the firing of the coach, quarterback and general manager. Last week, thousands of fans wore black to the game to mourn the loss of the season and encourage owner Clark Hunt to clean house.
It sounds as though McCluster's new friend is fully behind the effort, but he took no offense.
"She loves her Chiefs and she wants us to win," he said. "She told us she'd been praying for us. I told her I would relay her message to the whole team to work harder."

An elderly woman received a turkey from Chiefs WR Dexter McCluster, and she let the player hear it about the team's struggles.
Kansas City Chiefs running back/wide receiver Dexter McCluster delivered a Thanksgiving meal to an elderly fan and was given an earful for the Chiefs’ woes this season.
“Y’all better start winning some games,” Ms. Louise said. “I’ve been praying, but y’all got to work a little bit harder.”
After signing a few autographs and delivering the meal, McCluster acknowledged...
The Kansas City Chiefs need to get real for second about Matt Cassel. In the NFL, the quarterbacks always get the blame for the team when things don’t go well, but it isn’t Cassel’s fault. Chief fans are already clamoring to pick Geno Smith in the NFL draft and that would be a mistake. It’s not a mistake because of Smith not being a good quarterback, but the real issue on...
The Kansas City Chiefs waived offensive lineman Rich Ranglin on Saturday and elevated wide receiver Jamar Newsome from the practice squad to the 53-man roster.
Newsome originally joined the Chiefs' practice squad in December 2011 after playing two games with Jacksonville that season. The former Central Florida player also spent time on Pittsburgh's practice squad.
Chiefs wide receiver Dexter McCluster has left Sunday's game against the Denver Broncos to be evaluated for a head and neck injury.
It was unclear when McCluster was hurt, but the injury was announced at the beginning of the second half. McCluster had been active over the first 30 minutes, running twice for 23 yards and catching a game-high four passes for 21 yards.
Brady Quinn was a good QB at Notre Dame, he's not an NFL QB. I blame the front office for this mess.
After going a red hot 13-1 in week 11, I went 2-1 on Thanksgiving day. For the season that makes it 106-57. I'm still in striking distance of .750 for the season.
Let's take a look at week 12.
Minnesota at Chicago - The Vikings are coming off their bye...
Kansas City Chiefs wide receivers Dwayne Bowe (head/back)
and Jonathan Baldwin (head/neck) were among the players that were able to fully
practice yesterday, while offensive linemen Brandon Albert (back) and Ryan
Lilja (knee) didn’t participate once again.
Bowe was able to suit up for last weekend’s matchup against
the Cincinnati Bengals, but he exited to game due to injury...
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) Brady Quinn is getting another shot on the Kansas City Chiefs' quarterback merry-go-round.
Coach Romeo Crennel announced Wednesday that Quinn will start Sunday's game against the Denver Broncos, regaining the job he lost when he sustained a concussion against Oakland.
Quinn was cleared to play last week against Cincinnati and came on at halftime for...
1. The Kansas City Chiefs select: Geno Smith | QB | West Virginia Not an elite prospect, but Geno Smith is the pinnacle of the 2013 Quarterback class, and a better option both in the short and long term than those likely to be available in Free Agency or via trade. Kansas City has [...]
Kansas City wideout Dwayne Bowe, who sat out the entire second half Sunday against Cincinnati with neck and back problems, is probable for Sunday's game against Denver, according to coach Romeo Vrennel who expects him to play.Fantasy Spin:That's the good news. The bad news is that Brady Quinn is his starting quarterback and he'll be covered by the talented Champ Bailey.
Denver Broncos (7-3) at Kansas City Chiefs (1-9)
There are two trends that apply to this game, but both of them can be neutralized by the fact that this matchup is divisional. Home dogs are 57-40 ATS off a loss as home dogs since 2002, but that only 13-10 ATS as divisional home dogs after being non-divisional home dogs. When you go back to 2002 to get a bigger sample size, that trend...
