Kirk Cousins on Friday addressed Washington Redskins’ stunning acquisition of Alex Smith this week, effectively ending his tenure with the team. It goes without saying Cousins was surprised by the development.

“I was actually working out at my hotel room here in Minneapolis, and when I finished the workout, went over to my phone and saw the news,” Cousins told USA TODAY in an interview in Minneapolis ahead of Super Bowl LII, as transcribed by NJ.com. “Every player looks forward to free agency. That’s where I’m headed, and it should be an exciting process. You hopefully want some teams out there to pursue you, and then find the right fit.

“I still felt like there was a good chance I would be back [in Washington]. I was keeping an open mind. Nothing really surprises me at this point.”

Cousins added in the interview that he doesn’t feel the Smith trade will negatively impact his value in free agency.

“I don’t think so,” Cousins said. “It shouldn’t. I think the tape is what you go off of. If you’re not going off the tape, I really wouldn’t want to be there anyway. I want to go to a team that’s going to evaluate the tape, watch the film, know football, and make those decisions based off that.”

The 29-year-old quarterback indicated winning trumps everything when it comes to choosing a new team, much more than money.

“It’s just about winning,” he said. “It doesn’t matter where you live, the other variables. If you’re not winning, the rest doesn’t matter. Ultimately, it will be: Can we win? That’ll be the No. 1 factor.”

Reports suggests several teams are interested in bringing in Cousins, and rightfully so. Although a subsequent rumor indicates Cousins has his sights set on one team in particular.

There’s been no indication that the Vikings are interested in Cousins, but given the uncertainty at the position — not to mention plenty of cap space — it’s certainly plausible the team could make a run at Cousins.
