This is going to sound insane, unrealistic and probably nothing more than a pipe dream. The Philadelphia Eagles should go all out to acquire the services of Arizona Cardinals superstar wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald. There are two things wrong with this idea that is going to jump out in everyone’s mind after reading that last sentence. One, the Cardinals will not be interested in trading away their franchise player and two, the Eagles are set at the wide receiver position. Nothing is certain in the NFL. I am going to prove that both of those statements are wrong and that a Fitzgerald to Philly move can be something more than just wishful thinking. The thing that got me thinking about Larry Fitzgerald in an Eagles uniform was the play of Nick Foles on Sunday against Tampa Bay. Foles differs in so many way from Michael Vick, but one way that really stood out for me was his ability to compete passes to wide receivers even when they are well covered. Vick likes to wait until a receiver is open before he released the football. This is why he holds the ball longer than any other quarterback. Foles sees a receiver in a one-on-one matchup and throws it to a spot where the receiver has a chance to get it. Jason Avant and Riley Cooper have made a few plays because of this. Larry Fitzgerald could make a lot of plays because of this. Fitzgerald is like a top of the line snow mobile stuck in the middle of the desert. He doesn’t have a quarterback who can get him the ball in the right spots to make plays and that quarterback doesn’t have an offensive line that can ever give him enough time to make plays. That brings me to my next point. Should the Cardinals really keep a wide receiver who will make an average of about $15 million a year through the 2018 season while this team is in need of a massive rebuilding job on the offensive line and at quarterback. The Cardinals could turn Larry Fitzgerald into DeSean Jackson, two first round draft picks and a second round draft pick. Does that sound crazy? The Eagles turned Kevin Kolb into a Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie and a second round draft pick. The Arizona Cardinals would still have a really good receiving core with Jackson, Michael Floyd, Andre Roberts and Early Doucet. They could use two first round picks that will both probably be in the top 10 on their offensive line. There is a really good offensive line class coming in to the 2013 NFL Draft. The Cardinals would save a good deal of money on Fitzgerald’s contract and get several draft picks in the process. They would get to add two really good players for an offensive line that is so bad right now, the front office can’t get a good feel for how good Kevin Kolb or any quarterback on this roster can be within this offense. The Cardinals benefits of trading away Fitzgerald are the ability to quickly upgrade that offensive line without taking a huge downgrade in their receiving core. The Eagles benefit by getting a complete professional, a dominant red zone target and the most fundamentally sound wide receiver in the NFL. He will raise the ability of everyone in the offense and make life so much easier for a young quarterback like Nick Foles. The other aspect of this potential trade is the work ethic of Foles and Fitzgerald. Foles is a gym rat and a film nut. Fitzgerald spends his summers working out with fellow NFLers. Everyone else on the offense will want to raise their work ethics if they don’t want to get left in the dust. Anytime you have a NFL team that is in the beginning stages of any type of rebuilding mode, they tend to listen to all offers. Eagles GM Howie Roseman would be smart to go all in for Larry Fitzgerald this winter.
