News broke earlier today that the Philadelphia Eagles and QB Michael Vick agreed on a restructured, one-year deal for the 2013 season. Newly hired head coach Chip Kelly held a press conference at 1:30 PM to discuss the additions to his coaching staff as well as the signing of Vick.
When asked about how Vick will be used in Kelly's new system, he responded, "Michael will be back next season with us. Knowing we have him and Nick Foles allows us to plan our offense accordingly."
Kelly was also spoke highly about Vick and his performance. "I look at Vick's skill set, how he can throw, beat people w/ his feet ... And then you look at the landscape at QB, who else is available. Vick's toughness stood out on film ... Toughness in QB can't be overstated," he said when asked about why the team signed Vick back.
Though Kelly would not discuss who would be the starting quarterback or who would get the most reps during practice, but he did say this regarding the quarterback position, "There's an open competition, both of them are aware of that ... In this league, you better have two."
Regarding his view on the team's new defensive coordinator, Kelly believes that his defense will be successful because of how the defense will mix it up. "Bill Davis' background in both 3-4/4-3 helps. I've liked 3-4 better, helps special teams, but you can't build it in a day."
Regarding who would be calling the offensive plays this season, due to the signing of Pat Shurmur as offensive coordinator, Kelly said, "I'll call the good plays, Pat will call the bad ones."
All in all, Kelly's press conference should give Eagles fans hope. Kelly is determined to lead the Eagles back to the playoffs and compete at the highest level. The open competition at quarterback will be a big headline that will be followed all the way through the pre-season. Look for an exciting year in Philadelphia.
