Detroit Lions cornerback Chris Houston says he doesn't feel any pressure about his role with the team.
It's a big one.
Houston appears to be one of the most valuable players the Lions (No. 11 in the AP Pro32) have, especially on defense. He has experience and talent in a secondary that desperately needs it.
Rookie cornerback Bill Bentley is projected to start opposite Houston. Veteran safety Louis Delmas struggles to stay healthy.
Houston says he tries to establish his dominance each game so teams know he will pick off or deflect passes thrown his way. The mindset helped Houston make a career-high five interceptions last year in his fifth NFL season.

In 2011, the Detroit Lions' stunning reversal of fortune was driven by many unique variables, perhaps the most important of which was an uptick in play and health at the quarterback position. Finally, Matthew Stafford stayed upright and played a full season. In the process, he showed fans how grand football life can be when a team finally finds "their guy" at the...
We hare at DJC don’t put a lot of stock in any one pre -season game, or in the score, but look to judge the Detroit Lions on what they do over the four pre-season contests. Of course even that is not a great indicator. The year this team went winless they were 4-0 in the pre-season. What we are saying is pre-season doesn’t mean a whole heck of a lot, and we are kind of glad the...
ALLEN PARK, Mich. -- Despite their playoff run a year ago, the Detroit Lions were labeled as an undisciplined team that takes too many foolish penalties.
Guilty as charged, but they insist they're trying to do something about it.
The Lions were charged with only one penalty in their preseason opener last week, a 19-17 loss to Cleveland.
And that lone personal-foul penalty...
ALLEN PARK, Mich. -- Running back Mikel Leshoure returned to practice Wednesday for the Detroit Lions.
Well, sort of.
Leshoure took part in the individual drills early on, but again sat out the team portion of practice because of an injured right hamstring.
Leshoure, who missed all of last season because of a torn Achilles' tendon, suffered the hamstring injury on the second...
This isn't very surprising but it's disheartening for Jahvid Best and it goes beyond just his prospects for this season. Best may never have a real NFL career because of the cumulative impact of three known concussions and who knows how many undiagnosed concussions. The Lions backfield situation is a mess of their own making. They knew Best was undersized and had an injury...
ESPN's Adam Schefter expects that Lions running back Jahvid Best will begin the season on the PUP list. Best has been dealing with concussion symptoms for much of the last year.Fantasy Spin:That would eliminate Best for the first six games of the 2012 campaign. With Best out for the forseeable future, expect Kevin Smith to take over the running game in Detroit.
There’s some jokes in here about the Detroit Lions having half of Detroit Police Department on speed dial. Or knowing them all on a first name basis. Or getting acquainted with future suspects. But I won’t make those jokes cause this was really a nice gesture. The Detroit Lions had the biggest number of arrests this off season and it makes sense to invite the officers that protect...
(Eds: Updates. With AP Photos.) By LARRY LAGE AP Sports Writer Keiland Williams was with the Washington Redskins a year ago, believing he had a shot to start after showing signs of promise as a rookie.
The Redskins surprised Williams by cutting him just before last season and he was claimed by the Lions the next day to bolster their depth without then-rookie Mikel Leshoure and with...
According to the Detroit Free Press, Lions receiver Titus Young has had a standout summer, and though he missed the team's first preseason game due to a paternity leave, he was back Monday, dominating one-on-one drills and "creating yards of separation with every cornerback he faced."Fantasy Spin:Matthew Stafford threw 663 passes last season, so there should be plenty...
As the training camp schedule winds down and the Detroit Lions head for the second preseason game of the slate, here's some news and information for the middle of the week.
It hasn't take long for Cliff Avril to get back into the swing of things. The defensive end is back in pads and ready to go after his shortened hold out. Avril says he's still a little rusty,...
Friday’s preseason game against the Cleveland Browns showed off part of the Detroit Lions’ retooled secondary with two of the young draft picks showing what they have learned thus far in camp. While one defensive rookie in particular looked impressive, … Continue reading →
The 2011 Lions made the team’s first playoff appearance since the Charlie Batch era in 1999, but were swiftly dispatched by the Saints in the first round. Matt Stafford threw for 5,000 yards and 40+ touchdowns. In any other year, that might have been a huge deal, but Drew Brees was busy breaking single-season passing yardage records. Now the Lions, having solved precisely none...
