Detroit Lions defensive end Cliff Avril ended his holdout by reporting to training camp on Sunday morning and signing his franchise tender, according to DetroitLions.com. Avril was designated the franchise tag of $10.6 million in March after he and the team could not agree on a long-term deal. The two sides continued to be far apart in negotiations at the July 16 deadline to get a new contract done, which forced Avril to play the 2012 season under the franchise tag. Avril began a holdout when training camp began July 26. That changed Sunday when he showed up for camp, passed his physical and signed the one-year tender offer. "If you're heart is filled with faith then you can't fear," Avril tweeted Sunday morning. "Back to work, let's get it #win." Avril led the team with 11 sacks and six forced fumbles last year. He has had 30 career sacks and 14 forced fumbles since 2008, when he was drafted in the third round out of Purdue. He is the onl...

Detroit Lions: Waiting on Cliff Avril Pays Off
Detroit Lions defensive end Cliff Avril reported to training camp on August 5, ending a 9-day holdout. After a breakout 11-sack season last year, Avril came into the offseason looking to be paid like a Pro Bowler on a long-term deal. The Lions had other plans, sticking him with the one-year franchise tag.
Like many players tagged this year, Avril refused to immediately sign his...
Answering the Detroit Lions’ backfield question
A tough question becomes simple with one small nod from the team doctors. When the Detroit Lions’ medical crew gives running back Jahvid Best that nod, their backfield issues disappear.
But that just won’t happen soon. With the ever-increasing concussion crackdown in the NFL, Best’s third such injury may be a death sentence.
With Best not cleared to play, and no timetable...

Smith on path to start for Lions in Week 1
ALLEN PARK, Mich. -- His injuries took him out. Injuries to others have put him back in.
That's the ironic reality of running back Kevin Smith's career with the Detroit Lions.
A year ago at this time, Smith couldn't even find a NFL team that would invite him to training camp.
"I was trying any way to get on a team, any team," Smith said. "I needed a...
Linebackers give Lions stability on defense
The Detroit Lions' front four gets most of the attention on defense, but coaches feel just as good about the three men behind them.

2012 Detroit Lions Training Camp Report: Don’t Bring Your Own Water!

Now, players make a short drive from their homes to the team facility in Allen Park, which sits in a business park featuring numerous Ford offices. The tallest building in the park is the indoor practice facility.

Injuries decimating Lions RB depth chart
This isn't a recording: the Lions could soon be in the market for help at running back with injuries piling up at that position for the third consecutive year. Stephon Green injured his knee in Monday's practice and joined the team's top two tailbacks -- Jahvid Best and Mikel Leshoure -- on the sideline. That leaves only veteran Kevin Smith, who slimmed down and appears...

The Detroit Lions made a minor change to their roster on Saturday morning as they waived-injured linebacker Ronnie Sneed and signed linebacker Korey Bosworth. He signed with the team as a defensive end back in 2010 and spent that season on injured reserve...

Lions Looking At DT's Ndamukong Suh, Nick Fairley At DE
Here's an interesting experiment taking place in the Detroit Lions' training camp: Defensive coordinator Gunther Cunningham has developed a specialty look that puts defensive tackles Nick Fairley and Ndamukong Suh on the outside and moves the defensive ends to the inside.
