In a move that was not at all surprising, the New York Jets fired offensive coordinator Tony Sparano after just one season with the team. New York also decided to part ways with Matt Cavanaugh, Mark Sanchez’s quarterback coach since the day he was drafted, whose contract was up at the end of this season.
Both of these moves were imminent considering the following offensive ranks:
30th in total offense
30th in passing offense
28th in points-per-game
Those abysmal statistics combined with the regression of Mark Sanchez and the misuse of Tim Tebow was a recipe for firings. The Jets will likely bring in another new face to completely change the offense, and they will want someone with experience as a play-caller (Sparano had never called plays before this season).
The new offensive coordinator will be Rex Ryan’s third in the past three seasons, not a good sign for a coach trying to keep his job. Ryan’s two favorites to replace Sparano are:
Norv Turner, San Diego Chargers Head Coach – He was fired at the end of the season so he’s a free agent, and I’m sure he’d be willing to take a step back into a coordinator position… but with the Jets? Not likely, but you never know. The guy knows offensive football so I wouldn’t be opposed to him.
Cam Cameron, Baltimore Ravens Offensive Coordinator – Ryan and Cameron have a relationship from when Rex was in Baltimore, but Cameron was fired mid-season, something you don’t see too often from a team in the playoff hunt. Having lived in Baltimore for a while, I’m not a fan of Cameron because his inconsistent game-planning and play-calling reminds me of Brian Schottenheimer, someone who the New York fans and media had an extreme love/hate relationship with.
I’m not sure if Gang Green will be able to lure either or those candidates to town.

Rex Ryan might change his tattoo
Listen up Mark Sanchez. If you do not start playing better, Rex Ryan will be changing the number on the New York Jets’ jersey depicted upon his wife in a tattoo located on his arm. Speaking at his press conference (finally), Rex immediately addressed the concerns from the media: “There’s a question – is that a real tattoo or not?” he said. “I’ll keep you guessing. It...
Film Room – Solving The Sanchez Problem
In recent days and weeks there’s been a great deal of attention directed towards the New York Jets search for new staff. Yet while it’s understandable that fans are anxious to learn who’ll be hiring the players and calling the plays next season, arguably the most important addition at Florham Park this year may also be one of the least heralded: with Mark Sanchez’s career...
Rex Ryan Says He May Have to Change His Tattoo If Mark Sanchez Doesn’t Start Playing Better
Rex Ryan continues to make news — odd news at that — away from the football field, as we found out last week. Vacationing in the Bahamas, the New York Jets head coach was spotted by the tabloids sporting an interesting tattoo on his right arm. Quickly, the tattoo — featuring Ryan’s wife wearing a Mark Sanchez jersey — became a viral sensation and the butt of jokes across...

Welcome to our off-season review of the New York Jets roster at Turn On The Jets. Each week we are going to attack a different position. We will have a roundtable discussion on it, Steve Bateman will submit a film breakdown examining it and our draft staff will look at potential prospects the Jets could add. Rex Ryan’s fatherly love for Mark Sanchez
Mark Sanchez’s 2012 New York Jets season was full of interceptions and fumbles—and he even threw in an unprecedented buttfumble for good measure. Week after week, Jets Nation watched in horror as our starting quarterback severely underperformed, and even more alarmingly, was not benched. Rex Ryan stuck by his guy, saying that “Mark gives us the best chance to win.”

Rex Ryan says he’ll have to change his tattoo if Mark Sanchez doesn’t play better
ANDREW THEODORAKIS/NEW YORK DAILY NEWSNew York Jets head coach Rex Ryan told the media today that if quarterback Mark Sanchez doesn’t improve next season, he’ll probably have to change the tattoo he has of his wife wearing Sanchez’s jersey.“Obviously, if Sanchez doesn’t play better, that number’s changing,” said Ryan per Manish Mehta of the NY Daily News.If I were...
Jets Part Ways With QB Coach Matt Cavanaugh
Jets quarterbacks coach Matt Cavanaugh was unable to fix Mark Sanchez this season and because of that, he's out of a job.
The New York Daily News reported Cavanaugh was dismissed upon reporting to the team facility Monday following a week-long break. Cavanaugh had been with the Jets since 2009.
Sanchez crashed-and-burned at the tail end of the 2011 season, leading to speculation...

Tim Tebow says he has no regrets
Despite what for all intents and purposes can only be described as a lost season in his NFL career, Tim Tebow insists that "everything happens for a reason."
Rex Ryan- “If Sanchez doesn’t play better, the number’s changing”
Jason WhitneyDuring the season ending press conference on Tuesday, Rex Ryan joked about his now famous tattoo that bears Mark Sanchez’s jersey number. The tattoo, which is of an erotically posed woman in a #6 Jets jersey (Sanchez’s number) has made headlines in previous weeks and made people wonder if Rex Ryan’s bromance with his starting quarterback was a bit less than healthy...
Rex Ryan Says He Will Change The Tattoo If Sanchez Doesn’t Play Better
Last week Rex Ryan took a quick vacation to the Bahamas to escape the Jets mess as I like to proclaim it. During the quiet vacation, things got really noisy again for Rex when he was photographed on the beach, and on his right arm was a tattoo of his wife wearing nothing but a Mark Sanchez jersey.
Ryan took it all in stride like he does everything, and knew he would have to...
What took so long? Jets finally fire Tony Sparano
We could've sworn this already happened. It was such a no-brainer that Jets offensive coordinator Tony Sparano would be fired, that we thought it had already happened along with GM Mike Tannenbaum getting the ax. But it actually happened this morning, ESPN’s Chris Mortensen reported. Eight days into 2013. So head coach Rex Ryan conveniently goes on vacation while the...
New York Jets 2013 Needs
Several teams had worse years than the Jets, but I don’t think anyone had a weirder year. Turned into a circus in the offseason by the media, the Jets lived up to the hype. Neither Mark Sanchez nor Tim Tebow led a touchdown drive all pre-season, but after a blowout win over the Bills week 1 and another win against the Dolphins week 3, this time in overtime, the Jets stood at 2...
Jets to let QB coach Cavanaugh go
The New York Jets have informed quarterbacks coach Matt Cavanaugh he will not be retained when his contract expires later this month. Head coach Rex Ryan informed Cavanaugh of the move Monday, as first reported by The Daily News. Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez has 52 turnovers over the past two seasons and was benched in favor of Greg McElroy late in the season. Sanchez started...
Jets Want To Name Offensive Coordinator Before Deciding On Mark Sanchez, Tim Tebow
Several times today Rex Ryan said that he wants next year's Jets offense to be "unpredictable," right now that could also extend to the statuses of quarterbacks Mark Sanchez and Tim Tebow, Mike Vorkunov of the Newark Star-Ledger reports.
Ryan and owner Woody Johnson would not speak to the future of either quarterback at their press conference, though neither one...
Cavanaugh won't return as Jets' QBs coach
Matt Cavanaugh will not return as the New York Jets' quarterbacks coach after four seasons with the team.
Cavanaugh's contract was due to expire in a few weeks and he was told Monday he would not be part of Rex Ryan's staff next season. Cavanaugh was responsible for the development of Mark Sanchez, who took a step back in his fourth season and was benched late in the...
