As noted by Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News’ The Jets Stream in his recent report, New York Jets starting quarterback Mark Sanchez took the high road last season whenever the topic of Tim Tebow came up during interactions with the media. Sanchez’s recent comments on FOX Sports Radio this week regarding Tim Tebow indicate that remains the case this offseason, but Sanchez did openly question the team for how it handled the crushing onrush of Tebowmania after trading for the player on March 21, 2012 who generates near-exhaustive coverage, increased scrutiny and borderline mania wherever he has played. Speaking of Tebow on Fox Sports Radio’s Petros and Money, Sanchez said, “It’s cool. We’re good,” but expounded upon how the Jets went about the business of stoking instead of extinguishing the media firestorm once Tebow arrived. “I just don’t know if it was the best situation for either of us, but you play with the cards you are dealt with and do the very best you can,” Sanchez said of the coverage surrounding Tebow on On how ESPN was a constant presence at the team’s training camp in Cortland, N.Y. last year, Sanchez observes, “Well, I think part of that, too, is ESPN didn’t necessarily sneak in overnight at our training camp,” going on to say, “They had to get permission to go. You can avoid that stuff on your own if you like, in my opinion, but he’s a popular guy and people gravitate towards the guy. He’s a special person and a heck of a competitor, so people want to know what’s going on, but that’s all I got on that.” Expanding on how he and Tebow are “good,” Sanchez said, “He’s a nice guy. He works hard and that’s good. It’s honestly, after the shock of the whole thing, was something you were going to have to deal with. I’m dealing with it the best way I can and trying to stay positive about the whole thing, and I think it’s not on my mind. I’m concerned right now with learning a new system and being the best quarterback I can be, and hopefully that helps the team.” It sounds like Sanchez has a good grasp on the situation. It wasn’t Tebow’s fault that the team traded for him and the circus that followed was caused more by the team’s apparent unwillingness to keep it in check, allowing it to take over the entire season with the subsequent, prolonged and distracting media frenzy. I’m just relieved to learn that the two quarterbacks are still buds. Because as long as they have each other, there’s no telling how horrible next season can go for the Jets. Unless the team trades Tebow. The Jets are going to trade Tebow, right?
