New Giants tight end Martellus Bennett was once a Dallas Cowboy.

Now he’s a New York Football Giant, and he wasn’t afraid to discuss his “hatred” of his former team.

Bennett said he had some ill feelings towards the Cowboys. He served as Pro Bowl tight end Jason Witten’s back-up, so the opportunities were not too frequent to contribute on the field.

I’m very excited to see that Bennett was that fired up on just the first day of training camp. He seems eager to prove that he can be a productive target in Eli Manning’s aerial attack.

In sports today, it seems that camaraderie is all too common amongst members of opposing teams. Definitely in baseball and basketball, we always see opposing players talking during down time in play.

Back in the old days, opposing players really didn’t talk much. If you were on the other team, you were treated like the enemy.

Football especially provides a medium where enemies truly go to battle on the gridiron. Except maybe for hockey, football is the only sport where there is legitimate hitting on every single play.

That’s why I like Bennett’s comments about the Cowboys. Of course, I hope he doesn’t permanently injure anyone while barreling down the field. We’re talking about someone’s livelihood here, so you can never wish for too much pain.

But I’d love to see a return to good old fashioned, hardnosed football. Granted, simply based on the nature of the sport, camaraderie between opponents isn’t as common in football as in baseball or basketball.

I would love nothing more than to see Bennett catch a pass from Manning in the flats and then break through attempted tackles by Sean Lee and Gerald Sensabaugh — knocking those guys to the turf in the process.

I don’t think there was any malicious intent with Bennett’s statements. However, if he does plan on taking his fury out on an opponent, I’m fine that it’s the Cowboys he’s talking about.
