Lions general manager Martin Mayhew said his team has concluded its efforts to obtain the major names in free agency at today's NFL Annual Meeting. Mayhew said the Lions are currently working on re-signing kicker Jason Hanson, but that is the only free agent they are actively pursuing right now. "Yeah, I think in terms of those big contracts; I think they're starting to wind down from a free agency standpoint," Mayhew said. "Obviously, we got the draft coming up, and we've got some of our own guys who we're trying to sign. You mentioned Jason, still working on his contract. And then they'll be some other signings, I would think. "And then, obviously, after the draft we have a period of time to continue to try to add to our roster and look for guys, whether it's signing free agents, street-free agents, or trades. Whatever the possibilities are." That likely means Detroit's reported interest in Osi Umenyiora is probably not true. While things are challenging from a salary cap standpoint, Mayhew said his team has the flexibility to make some more moves this offseason. Source: MLive.com

With their free agent moves are the Lions really on a course for success in 2013?

Free agency for the Lions this season started with a bang. Osi Umenyiora and What He Would Bring to the Detroit Lions

Though the Detroit Lions have made some major moves in the past few weeks, general manager Martin Mayhew claims his team is done making waves on the roster front. Interestingly enough, though, at the same exact time, the Lions have been linked with free agent defensive end Osi Umenyiora, formally of the New York Giants. The 31 year old had hoped to cash in on the open market, but...

Detroit Lions Free Agency Recap

I was trying to wait as long as I could in the event that the Detroit Lions made more moves but Martin Mayhew said on Monday that they are done making any more major Free Agent moves.  I’m still holding out hope that the Lions will make a play for another defensive end and get another starting linebacker but it probably won’t be a big name player if they do. Martin Mayhew confirmed...

Lions President Tom Lewand Won't Guarantee PK Jason Hanson's 22nd Year As Kicker

It’s widely assumed that Jason Hanson will return for a 22nd season with the Lions now that he’s decided to put off retirement. And while the Lions have made it clear they want Hanson back on their team and in their locker room, team president Tom Lewand stopped short of guaranteeing that would take place at the NFL owners meetings today. “We’re waiting to hear back from...

Detroit Lions Should Explore Adding Elvis Dumervil

If not for a big mistake by the Denver Broncos and a fax machine, there wouldn’t even be a conversation about Elvis Dumervil being on the open market. But, late Friday afternoon, a mistake happened and Dumervil went from being extended to becoming the best free agent pass rusher available. The dominating defensive end was scheduled to make $8 million dollars. The Lions, after...

Offensive, defensive lines a concern for Lions

Even with hot-shot quarterbacks and game-breaking receivers, it still comes down to the trenches in the NFL. You have to get to their quarterback and you have to protect yours. Otherwise, you're going nowhere. The Detroit Lions made headlines during the first few days of free agency. Reggie Bush will restore the big-play potential at running back and safety Glover Quin should...

Lions GM Martin Mayhew Says Re-Signing Cliff Avril 'Would Have Cost Us Two Players'

The Detroit Lions allowed defensive end Cliff Avril to sign with the Seattle Seahawks without a fight for one reason. Avril was going to cost too much. "There are a lot of moving pieces in free agency, and we started down the road with some guys, and we were in those talks, and you start thinking about bringing a guy back, bringing Cliff back, and it probably would have...
