When the Washington Redskins acquired the No. 2 pick in the 2012 NFL Draft in order to select Baylor quarterback Robert Griffin III, it put the Miami Dolphins and Cleveland Browns in a tough spot.

Both teams need a quarterback and neither seems to be a serious player for free agent signal-caller Peyton Manning. That has left them with few options.

Matt Flynn stands to make a lot of money as a fallback option for the Miami Dolphins, Cleveland Browns, or Seattle Seahawks.

Matt Flynn Negotiation With Dolphins and Browns

Green Bay Packers backup Matt Flynn is the second-best quarterback on the market this offseason and the 26-year-old is likely to be pursued by whichever of the league’s quarterback-hungry teams that don’t land Manning or possess one of the first two picks in April’s draft.

That puts him in a position to make a serious amount of money.

The Dolphins and Browns have apparently opened negotiations with Flynn already as the first night of free agency winds down. The LSU product would be an upgrade over what both teams currently have under center, and while some believe he’ll wait to let Manning set the market, if either Miami or Cleveland bowls him over with an offer I seriously doubt he would wait.

The Browns want to upgrade their quarterback situation and don’t appear to have much faith in Colt McCoy moving forward. That’s not surprising since the Texas product hasn’t developed at all over the past few years.

Meanwhile, Matt Moore had a nice season for the Dolphins in 2011, but no one sees him as a franchise quarterback. Flynn would be an upgrade over Moore and the Dolphins have a solid running game and a good offensive line to build around.

The Seattle Seahawks are also in the mix for Flynn, but there is no word on whether or not they have opened negotiations with the former Packer.

We think Miami is the perfect situation for Flynn, especially because Miami’s new head coach Joe Philbin was his offensive coordinator in Green Bay from 2007-2011. Philbin oversaw Flynn’s development and the long-time backup knows his system.

When the Manning derby ends, we think Flynn will wind up with the Dolphins.
