Maintaining the belief that he's outplayed his current contract, Maurice Jones-Drew is ready to make a statement.

According to Jaguars beat writer Tania Ganguli, Jones-Drew, barring a "change of mind," will skip this week's mandatory minicamp, and could possibly hold out into the regular season.

He is subject to $60,000 in fines if he fails to attend the three-day minicamp, per the league's collective bargaining agreement.

On Monday, Jags GM Gene Smith admittedly stated that the team has no intentions of re-working Jones-Drew's five-year, $30.95 million deal he signed in 2009.

"He has expressed that he would like to renegotiate and we have expressed, again, that we feel he has a contract with two years left," Smith said. "And we expect him to fulfill those obligations."

MJD, 27, has established himself as an elite NFL running back, but as he gets closer to the dreaded age of 30, his explosiveness -- and market value -- will begin to lessen. As in most of these cases, Jacksonville is caught between a rock and a hard place; either pay the man who may have but a few quality seasons left, or let him rot and do battle with what you've already got.

Either way, this is not an ideal situation for new head coach Mike Mularkey, who's faced with the unenviable of task of turning the Jaguars into a winner.
