The Minnesota Vikings announced their 53 man roster yesterday as they prepare for their season opener against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sept. 9. Some notable cuts are veterans cornerback Chris Carr and quarterback Sage Rosenfels.

Now that the Vikings have finally gotten their roster to the legal limit to open the season, it will be interesting to see how they do.  The Vikings, a team that finished a franchise worst 3-13 last year, are looking to improve upon that as they enter the season with Christian Ponder as the starting quarterback.  This will be Ponder's first full season and he will look to prove to his teammates and coaching staff that they made the right choice in choosing him in the first round of the 2011 NFL Draft.

Ponder will have a few weapons with Percy Harvin and Adrian Peterson, who is looking more and more likely to be ready for the start of the season.  He will, however, be without one of his more electrifying targets in Jerome Simpson as he is suspended for three games to start the season.  Simpson violated the substance abuse policy for having illegal drugs in his home and has been suspended as of June 11.

The Vikings' secondary remains the biggest question as to how they will perform, just as it always has.  The cutting of Carr is surprising because many believed that he might have been the nickleback behind Antoine Winfield and Chris Cook.  The Vikings opted to go with Josh Robinson instead as he is much younger and has great speed.  The Vikings drafted Robinson in the third round of the 2012 NFL Draft and are hoping that he can fill in and help a very weak secondary.

The Vikings are not going to turn too many heads this year as they are in the rebuilding phase, but they have the potential to make some moves.  Depending on how Ponder controls the offense and how the secondary improves, the Vikings could double their win total from last year.  If they can do that, it would essentially be considered a successful year for the boys in purple.
