PLAYERS: Tim TebowMike Devito
TEAMS: New York Jets

Via The Victory Formation:

There were plenty of players on the New York Jets that were willing to speak anonymously about Tim Tebow this past season, but none of those willing to be accountable to their negative assessment of their lightning rod of a teammate. But defensive end Mike DeVito isn’t afraid to attach his name to what he believes about Tebow, and it appear to contradict the message we have been hearing from the Jets organization in regards to the backup QB’s ability to help win games.

While speaking with WFAN in New York, DeVito lamented about Tebow not getting an opportunity to do what he did while he was in Denver the previous season.

“I would have liked to see him get a chance,” DeVito said.

DeVito said he doesn’t make the decisions and “I trust the guys that we have to do that, but Tim has such an intangible in the type of leader and the type of person that he is.

“I think he’s a great leader. I think he’s a guy who could have won games for us, and I think that’s why we had him here.

“I really do feel like, with Tim at the helm, there is an aspect of it that you can’t really put into words, but guys just want to rally behind him. And when you put Tim in that leadership role, that’s where he excels. … I think [if] you put Tim in there, I think we win games. I really believe that.”

DeVito’s words sure do sound like a knock against Mark Sanchez, who he has been his teammate since Sanchez’s rookie year. But DeVito made sure not to say that the team couldn’t win with Sanchez under center. Sanchez was the QB on a team that reached two-straight AFC Title games, after all.

“If he gets his confidence back, gets around his receivers again and gets Santonio [Holmes] back, I really feel like Mark can be the quarterback he was in 2009, 2010 when we were winning all those games,” he said.

The irony in that statement is that Mark Sanchez is the same quarterback from those seasons. The team around him is not the same. While the defense is still effective, it isn’t nearly as dominating, nor did it have Darrelle Revis this past season. The offensive line went from among the best in the league in ’09 and ’10, to one of the absolute worse. Shonn Greene doesn’t have a backfield running mate like Thomas Jones or LaDainian Tomlinson either. Those specific attributes to those teams helped cover up the overall poor play of Sanchez during those seasons.

It will remain a mystery as to if Tebow could have helped the Jets win many games this season. The facts are facts. This wasn’t a good football team, and was never close to being one. They lost several games by double-digits, and often looked over-matched. When Tebow “led” the Broncos to the postseason a year ago, he did so with a team that was much more talented. As we can see, Peyton Manning took them to the next level in terms of overall performance in 2012, with many of the same pieces that Tebow had alongside him.

DeVito’s words may bring comfort to Tebow, who was obviously upset with the lack of opportunity, but ultimately, his words will ring hollow with the New York Jets, who are likely to trade him this offseason and move in a completely different direction without him.

  • can't disagree strongly enough with devito's comments, once rex and the coaching staff saw tebow "perform" in practice, they knew a huge mistake had been made..............
  • Tebow never stood a chance of getting onto the field for the jets. Why?....because their head coach is a moron, and so is the front office for retaining rex. He is not a leader, just a joke, and after the jets miss the playoffs AGAIN next year rex is gone. But as a Giants fan I'm looking forward to the 3 Ring Circus that is a rex ryan coached team. Maybe he'll even decide to keep 'Buttfumble' sanchez and we'll all be in for another 16 game laugh fest from the most ineptly run franchise in the NFL.

5 things Dicks Sporting Goods can do with Tim Tebow

Dick's Sporting Goods is on to something. The Dicks's store in West Nyack, NY, creatively displayed the dummy bearing Tebow's jersey as benched in a display that set every other Jets and Giants player in a manly stance. You might say the display diss'd Tebow, but I think it mocked the Jets for their wasteful trade for a first-round Draft pick player...

Jets DL Mike DeVito wishes Tim Tebow got a chance

Tim Tebow was bashed by many teammates during the season, but there is at least one Jets player who believes in him. Defensive lineman Mike DeVito says he wishes Tebow got a shot to lead the team. DeVito made his comments during an interview with WFAN’s Evan Roberts and Joe Benigno on Friday. “I’d be lying if I said I didn’t feel for Tim and how it went down,” DeVito said...

Jets DL Mike DeVito Says Tebow Could Have Helped Team Win More Games

The Jets mess is over, at least the 2012 version of it, but people just won’t let it die down.  Rex Ryan was photographed on a beach, and now all of America knows he has a tattoo of his wife in a Sanchez Jersey.   The Jets are interviewing potential GM’s, but reportedly won’t allow them to make a decision on Ryan just yet.  Oh yea and most importantly, that Tebow guy is...

Tim Tebow Will Be An Arizona Cardinal In 2013

Tim Tebow is not for everyone, he is a limited passer and needs to be with a coach and team that will work with him and build around his limitations. Tim Tebow’s mannequin can’t even get off bench

It’s no secret that Jets head coach Rex Ryan is not a fan of Tebowmania. Ryan has let Tim Tebow ride the bench the entire season behind Mark Sanchez (who we all know is probably having the worst year of his career). When Sanchez was finally benched, Ryan even played [...]

Photo: Rex Ryan has tattoo with likeness of wife, Mark Sanchez, and Tim Tebow

Check out the ink that New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan apparently sports on his right bicep.I'm no expert, but it appears to be a tattoo of his wife wearing nothing but a No. 6 New York Jets jersey -- the same as much-maligned quarterback Mark Sanchez. Oh, and did I mention that the tattoo's likeness also resembles Jets quarterback Tim Tebow's signature "Tebowing...

CHFF TV: Tebow Would Have Led Jets To Playoffs; Rex Ryan Chose To Suck

Rex Ryan chose to suck this year, sticking with the brutal Mark Sanchez against the much more effective Tim Tebow. We break it all down this week here on CHFF TV. In fact, it's quite possible the Jets make the playoffs if Tebow is the quarterback.

Jets QB competition or controversy?

Not talking about the New York Jets in recent weeks has been bittersweet. On one hand, we haven't had to deal with constant SportsCenter coverage of Jets practice or Tim Tebow running with his shirt off. On the other hand, I personally had a blast laughing at Mark Sanchez and the now infamous "ButtFumble". The Jets had an absolute train-wreck of a season. I know...

America’s Newest Crush

America really is such a dirty slut. Whether it’s teen heartthrobs, musicians, television shows, etc., our culture is constantly jumping from one thing to another. The Swizz Beats produced Jay-Z hit “On to the Next One” just about sums up what I’m talking about. One second, we are enamored by some trend, fad, or individual and then – almost in the same instance – we are...

Joe Rogan: Ronda Rousey could beat Floyd Mayweather

There are things some people say that just make me question their intelligence. UFC’s Joe Rogan just became one of them after insisting UFC women’s champion Ronda Rousey could beat boxer Floyd Mayweather  in a UFC-style bout. While Rogan makes the point that Mayweather isn’t suited for Rousey’s ground game in the octagon, he completely ignores several factors. The first...
