When the New England Patriots signed Danny Amendola this offseason, there were serious concerns about his injury history. Not surprisingly, the 27-year-old wideout has been hobbled by a groin injury already during the season’s first two weeks. Luckily for the Patriots, Amendola will reportedly avoid surgery on the injury. Amendola has been given a two to six week timetable for his return, but thanks to avoiding sports-hernia surgery it’s more likely that he’ll be back by Week 5. Given Amendola’s lengthy injury history, the Patriots are almost certainly not going to rush him back. Sports hernia surgery would have put Amendola out for at least six weeks, but this will give him a chance to play in a much shorter time. Amendola was at practice on Monday but was reportedly not moving well at all and he was clearly bothered by his groin injury. He is also dealing with torn adductor muscles in his hips, so yeah, the guy is a bit of a mess right now. The Patriots signed Amendola to a five-year, $28.5 million deal this offseason, with $10 million guaranteed. Given how many weapons New England lost to injury, legal issues and free agency this summer, Amendola’s absence is a serious problem for quarterback Tom Brady and company. Amendola didn’t play in Week 2 against the New York Jets, but had 10 catches and 104 yards in Week 1 against the Buffalo Bills. Nine of those receptions went for first downs. He has only played one 16-game season and that came back in 2010 with the St. Louis Rams. That year he had 85 receptions for 689 yards and three touchdowns. The Patriots have to be praying that Amendola gets back quickly and can bolster the team’s weak receiving corps soon.
