The injury of wide receiver Joe Morgan has brought on an intense competition for the third wide receiver spot on the roster. The New Orleans Saints went on and added another name to the mix with the signing of Patrick Crayton, who took no time joining the team and practiced Monday. Patrick Crayton Crayton will join the competition that already features rookie Kenny Stills, Nick Toon, as of last week Steve Breaston, and after an impressive preseason debut Preston Parker. The 34 year old Crayton will be entering his 9th season in league after spending the last couple of seasons with the San Diego Chargers. Crayton already has some familiarity with Sean Payton. While Crayton was in Dallas, Payton served as the offensive coordinator and therefore was in close proximity with Crayton since he was drafted in 2004. Crayton will bring experience to the receiving corp, since he played in the slot for most his career. His best season came in 2007 when he recorded 700 yards and 7 touchdowns. However, he won’t be expected to make that kind of an impact on this roster that already has plenty of receivers now. It is unlikely that Crayton even makes the roster, but he will have a fighting chance since he is competing with more inexperience candidates. I expect to see some of Crayton in the next preseason game against Oakland, running with the 3rd team. Nonetheless, the signing of Crayton brings more depth to a thin position and shows that the Saints are not done looking for wide receivers on the market.
