When Rob Ryan was fired by the Dallas Cowboys he told the press that he was not worried about finding a job. He said that he would not be unemployed for no more than five minutes. Well for Ryan it took a bit more than five minutes, but he is now employed by the New Orleans Saints as their defensive coordinator.
Saints Head Sean Payton spoke about the hiring of Ryan. He told reporters this weekend, “We have experience in preparing and playing against his defenses and they’ve always been challenging in terms of the different looks and pressures that they feature. We’ve had the chance to visit with each other and talk about our visions for our team and I’m excited about moving forward as we prepare for the 2013 season.”
Payton who was recently reinstated back as the head coach of the Saints after his suspension of “Bountygate” fired Steve Spagnuolo . Steve was the defensive coordinator this past season for the Saints. Payton wants the Saints defense to be a 3-4 scheme as opposed to the 4-3 defense they used this past season. The Saints allowed the worst single season total of number yards in NFL history last year with 7,042 yards allowed.
Ryan has run the 3-4 defenses while in New England, Oakland, Cleveland and Dallas. “I have had the opportunity to get to know Sean Payton and his staff a bit better recently and I am excited about joining the team. I’m ready to get to work on all facets of the game. This is a great opportunity and we’re getting started right away.” Ryan released that statement this past weekend once he was hired by the Saints.
The Saints also hired Stan Kwan to be their new special teams coach. With over 20 years of NFL coaching experience the Saints thought hiring Kwan was the right move. Sean Payton commented on Kwan’s hiring by saying, “Stan is a veteran coach that understands all nuances of the special team’s game. He has a wealth of knowledge and I believe he will be a good fit.”
