The New Orleans Saints announced on Wednesday that head coach Sean Payton has received a five-year contract extension. The Saints had given Payton a contract extension last season, but the NFL league office voided the deal, making Payton a free agent head coach. Payton has been serving a season long suspension, a penalty handed down regarding his role in the Saints Bountygate scandal.
Saints owner Tom Benson said the following during the announcement.
“I am excited that we have finalized this contract with Sean. He has been a great leader for our organization. He and Mickey (Loomis) have built a foundation of success as they have built the roster. We have already begun preparations for the 2013 season and I look forward to getting Sean back in the building as soon as possible, as I know our fans do as well.”
