Four years ago, John McCargo entered the NFL Draft as a highly recruited defensive tackle from North Carolina State. During his three-year Wolfpack career, McCargo totaled 134 tackles, and 4 sacks.
With this impressive statline, the Bills drafted McCargo with the 26th pick (Bills second 1st round pick) of the 2006 NFL Draft. Since being drafted, McCargo has not lived up to expectations totaling only 46 tackles and 2.5 sacks in his four seasons with the Bills.
While most fans have already labeled McCargo a ‘bust’, he is about to receive a second chance to prove them wrong. With an entire new coaching staff switching the defensive scheme from a 4-3 to a 3-4, McCargo has been given the opportunity to switch from a defensive tackle to a defensive end, which is a position he has never played before, as he explained to www.buffalobills.com:
“It’s been challenging, but it’s kind of what was expected. I’ve never played end before, so I’m going into it trying to do something totally new,” McCargo said. “I’m taking it a day at a time, just trying to learn and do the techniques that my coaches want me to do because it’s totally different. (But) nothing I can’t handle.”
Joining McCargo on his journey into becoming a defensive end is veteran Marcus Stroud. Together, they want to help the 2010 Bills’ defense become a force to be reckoned with in the AFC East.
