NFL.com analyst and former New York Giants quarterback Kurt Warner composed a list of the top 10 quarterbacks in the NFL and to the delight of Giants fans, Eli Manning made the list. Warner ranked Manning sixth among his top ten quarterbacks in the league. The full list was as follows: 10th. Tony Romo, 9th. Philip Rivers, 8th. Joe Flacco, 7th. Matt Ryan, 6th. Eli Manning, 5th. Ben Roethlisberger, 4th. Peyton Manning, 3rd. Drew Brees, 2nd. Aaron Rodgers, 1st. Tom Brady. Did Warner get Eli’s spot right? Let’s take a look to determine if Eli truly is the number 6 quarterback in the NFL. Super Bowl appearances, championships, and MVPs Based off of Super Bowl experience, Romo, Rivers, and Ryan are eliminated since neither of them have made it to the Super Bowl. Afterwards, Flacco, Rodgers and Brees each have one Super Bowl appearance. All three won in their Super Bowl debut and were the MVP of the Super Bowl. Peyton has two appearances, winning one and losing one, while earning MVP honors as well. Roethlisberger is next with three Super Bowl appearances, one championship and no Super Bowl MVPs. Eli is the only quarterback on the list with two Super Bowl appearances and two victories. In both appearances, he won the MVP and defeated a guy by the name of Tom Brady. While he didn’t make it to the Super Bowl three times like Roethlisberger, Eli has won it more than Roethlisberger and earned the Super Bowl MVP twice. Last but not least, Brady has 5 Super Bowl appearances with 3 titles and 2 MVPs. Eli Manning’s ranking: 2nd. Passing statistics Last season, Brees led all quarterbacks with 5, 177 passing yards. Romo was next on this list with 4,903 passing yards followed by Brady with 4,827, Ryan with 4,719, Peyton with 4, 659, Rodgers with 4,295, Eli with 3,948, Flacco with 3,817, Rivers with 3,606 and Roethlisberger with 3,265. Eli Manning’s ranking in passing yards: 7th. In passer rating last season, Rodgers led all quarterbacks with a rating of 108.0. Following Rodgers was Peyton with a rating of 105.8, Ryan with a rating of 99.1, Brady with a rating of 98.7, Roethlisberger with a rating of 97.0, Brees with a rating of 96.3, Romo with a rating of 90.5, Rivers with a rating of 88.6, Flacco with a rating of 87.7, and then Eli with a rating of 87.2. Eli Manning’s ranking in passer rating: 10th. In Total QBR, which values quarterbacks on all play types from 0-100, Peyton led all quarterbacks with a rating of 84.1. Following him was Brady with a 77.1, Ryan with a 74.5, Rodgers with a 72.5, Brees with a 67.9, Eli with a 67.4, Roethlisberger with a 62.8, Romo with a 62.7, Flacco with a 46.8 and Rivers with a 40.6. Eli Manning’s QBR ranking: 6th. Lastly, Total EPA, which calculates how each play affects potential changes on the scoreboard, or expected points added. In Total EPA, Peyton led all quarterbacks with a 116.8. Following Manning was Ryan with a 114.4, Brady with a 109.2, Rodgers with a 102.9, Romo with a 91.5, Brees with an 86.4, Eli with a 71.5, Roethlisberger with a 69.4, Flacco with a 39.7 and Rivers with a 23.1. Eli Manning’s Total EPA ranking: 7th. The Verdict While Eli arguably has more playoff success than anyone on this list besides Brady, the numbers display him as a top 10 quarterback during the regular season. What the numbers do fail to mention is Eli’s 4th quarter prowess which is what has amounted for his success. He holds the NFL season record for most game winning drives (8) and most 4th quarter touchdown passes (15). Even though Manning’s overall statistics don’t portray his playmaking and superstar ability, those two records speak for his clutch play and ultimately his value. It is because of this that he has two Super Bowl rings, both against the number one quarterback in the NFL in Brady. Because of this, Eli is the number five quarterback in the NFL behind Brady, Rodgers, Brees, and Peyton. Eli bumps off Roethlisberger for fifth because of his playoff and Super Bowl success as well as his fourth quarter play. While the numbers and Warner point towards Eli being the number six quarterback, he is a top 5 quarterback and this season has the potential to be a banner year for Eli if he can continue his gradual climb now that he is in the prime of his career.
