Okay, this was a very busy week for the New York Giants and their fans. It all began almost a week ago when they hoisted the Vince Lombari Trophy in Super Bowl 46. It continued with trips to Disney World for a certain MVP QB and multiple interviews for every player the day after.
It extended into a spectacular ticker-tape parade in Manhattan into a City Hall ceremony and extended into the Giants home turf of Metlife Stadium. With the victors come the spoils.
Also with victory in the NFL comes another set of problems: free agents, contract hold outs and low draft picks. These are all good problems to have.
Throughout the next few months Big Giants Boom will be examining each of these. We'll also be introducing a podcast in the coming weeks. More information on that at a later time. But I digress.
Without going into too much detail right now, the Giants will have to face the issue of re-signing Super Bowl hero Mario Manningham, replacing injured TE's Jake Ballard AND Travis Beckum, among others, and deciding whether or not to alienate new superstar Victor Cruz or established star Osi Umneyiora, both have recently addressed the issue of their contract.
Before we even deal with that, the NFL will hold its' annual scouting combines and their amateur draft. While the Giants hold the last spot in each round because they are the Super Bowl winners, there will still be a lot of talent to be had. The trouble is sorting it out.
Jerry Reese and his staff have done a good job of doing that in the past. They have to rely their instincts to recognize talent for this upcoming off-season. While the future is uncertain for the defending champions, one thing is for sure. They will face a tough climb next year too.
Their schedule has yet to be released, but their opponents have already been named. Among them: New Orleans, Green Bay, San Francisco, Cincinnati, Pittsburgh, Baltimore and, of course Dallas and Philadelphia two times each. All were playoff teams last year, with the exception of our division rivals.
Facing injuries and contract issues, it will be an interesting few months to see how the Giants front office deals with each issue without making any of them a distraction as they prepare for another grueling season.
A season that fans like you and us here at Big Giants Boom can't wait to start. In the meantime, let's go GIANTS!!!
