The New York Jets defeated the Philadelphia Eagles 27-20 in their final preseason game.
Matt Simms, son of Giant great Phill Simms, is doing all he can to make the Jets roster.
Mark Sanchez and Geno Smith both sat out of Thursday night’s game along with most of the other Jets starters. For the rest of the Jet players, Thursday night was a chance to prove to coaches they belong on the 53-man roster. Some players capitalized, while others might have sealed their (not-so-good) fate.
Kahlil Bell made the most of his opportunity Thursday night, rushing for two touchdowns. Joe McKnight was cut earlier this week, and Mike Goodson is suspended for the first four games of the regular season. With Chris Ivory battling an injury, it seems that Bell is a lock to make the 53-man roster.
Dan Carpenter, the former Dolphins kicker, might beat out Nick Folk to be the starting kicker. Carpenter nailed a 45-yard field goal last night in the Jets win.
Matt Simms is looking to beat Greg McElroy for the third quarterback spot. Simms played the whole game, throwing for 285 yards on 33 of 44 passing. Simms and McElroy have both been impressive in their playing time during the preseason.
QB drama, Holmes update
Geno Smith and Mark Sanchez both sat out of Thursday’s game and the starting quarterback for week one has yet to be named. I cant imagine Sanchez not getting the nod week one, but if his shoulder isn’t 100 percent, Smith will have to be ready. Smith will hopefully bounce back from his 3 interception performance against the Giants last week.
Santonio Holmes was dressed for the pregame Thursday night and warmed up but did not play. Holmes is still questionable for week one. Braylon Edwards was cut earlier this week, leaving the Jets with very little depth at wide receiver.
The 53-man roster will be finalized Saturday.
BEST OF MAXIM
Sometimes in the NFL, you have to be at the right place at the right time. It seems Jets quarterback Matt Simms has positioned himself at just that perfect place at the perfect moment, and in doing so, he’ll have a game to show the New York Jets he can help the team. Simms, who would normally play very little for the Jets even in preseason play, will be the beneficiary of three...
It looks like the New York Jets are looking to get younger at the quarterback position. They decided to release quarterback Greg McElroy in favor of Matt Simms.
A few minutes ago, #Jets released backup and former #Bama star Greg McElroy, source says. Had served as Geno Smith's mentor for months.

The Jets have until today at 6 p.m. to get their roster down to 53 players.
The most interesting question right now revolves around the No. 3 quarterback spot. Matt Simms completed 33-of-44 passes for 285 yards on Thursday night against the Eagles. Was it enough to secure him the third-string job over Greg McElroy?
Jets coach Rex Ryan raved about Simms yesterday.
“Oh my goodness”...
If you want to be a popular quarterback with New York Jets fans, your best best is to slide as far down the depth chart as possible. We know the backup quarterback is always the most popular guy in town but here with the Jets, the third and fourth stringers have truly become the belles of the ball.
After playing a respectable fourth quarter and overtime in last week’s pre-season...
With New York Jets' quarterbacks Mark Sanchez and Greg McElroy hobbled by injuries, second year gunslinger Matt Simms has made a strong case this preseason to be the team's backup quarterback to start the 2013 regular season.
Matt Simms, competing for the Jets' No. 3 quarterback job, led four scoring drives and Kahlil Bell had two touchdown runs and New York beat the Philadelphia Eagles 27-20 in the teams' preseason finale Thursday night.
With the Jets' quarterback competition still uncertain, Geno Smith and Mark Sanchez didn't play. But Simms certainly showed he might deserve to stick...

BY NICK ST. DENISThe stage was set for Matt Simms and Kahlil Bell. It was a small stage by normal standards, but a big one for the two New York Jet reserves. With quarterbacks Mark Sanchez and Greg McElroy sidelined to injury and rookie Geno Smith kept away for insurance, the runway was clear for Simms Thursday night in the Jets' preseason finale against the Philadelphia Eagles...
With most of the starters getting the night off, including quarterbacks Geno Smith and Mark Sanchez, the Jets won the "Back-up Bowl," 27-20, on Thursday night against the Philadelphia Eagles at MetLife Stadium.A rough first series aside, quarterback Matt Simms did a lot to improve his roster stock against the Eagles' back-ups, going 33-44 with 285 yards, the most by...
For a team trying to decide on a starting quarterback, Matt Simms sure looked pretty good for the New York Jets.
It came against the Philadelphia Eagles' backups, of course. And, Simms doesn't even know if he'll still be on the roster after this weekend. While Mark Sanchez and Geno Smith wait for Rex Ryan and the Jets to select a starter, Simms made a strong case to...
Although the Jets have not made any official announcements regarding cuts, it appears Greg McElroy will be released when the roster is trimmed down to its 53-man limit, according to ESPN's Chris Mortensen.McElroy, a seventh round draft pick out of Alabama in 2011, will be replaced by Matt Simms, the son of former Giants quarterback Phil Simms and undrafted free agent out of the...
