When the Houston Texans let safety Ed Reed go earlier this week, we all knew someone would pick him up. While his former team, the Baltimore Ravens, aren’t interested in a reunion, the New York Jets reportedly want to bring the nine-time Pro Bowler aboard. Jets head coach Rex Ryan was the defensive coordinator of the Ravens during Reed’s best years in Baltimore. The eight-time All-Pro has cleared waivers and can now sign with any team. While a few years ago Reed would have been scooped up immediately, he’s 35 and the Texans thought he has lost some speed. Current Jets free safety, Dawan Landry has played well this year, but is more suited to playing strong safety. And the team’s current strong safety, Antonio Allen, has struggled all season, especially in coverage. Signing Reed to play center field for the defense while also quarterbacking things on that side of the ball would make a lot of sense for Gang Green. Reed spent the first 11 years of his career with the Baltimore Ravens and carved out a Hall of Fame resume for himself. He was the NFL’s Defensive Player of the Year award in 2004 and led the league in interceptions three times (2004, 2008 and 2010). Reed signed a three-year, $14.875 million deal with the Texans this offseason. By releasing him, Houston is essentially admitting it made a mistake acquiring him, and that decision cost the team $5 million. Earlier on Wednesday reports surfaced that Jets general manager John Idzik didn’t like the idea of bringing in Reed. Apparently that stance has softened in just a few hours. We’ll keep you updated on this story if we hear more.
