Found January 17, 2012 on The Penalty Flag:
After 19 weeks the NFL is down to its final four.  Four teams with a singular goal; to earn a trip to Indianapolis and Super Bowl XLVI, for the opportunity at immortality and to be called World Champions. In the NFC, Eli Manning and the New York Giants will travel out west to take on Jim Harbaugh’s San Francisco 49ers.  Who will win, who will lose, who’s going to the Super Bowl?  Find out in this NFC Championship pick and prediction. These two teams met back in Week 10 of the NFL regular season with the 49ers winning 27-20.  Whatever you do, don’t look to that game for insight as to who will win this one as both teams are different than they were nine weeks ago.  The 49ers are on the brink of a return to glory.  A win over the Giants would send them to their first Super Bowl since 1995 when they beat the San Diego Chargers.  Fast forward 17 years and Jim Harbaugh has the opportunity to get to the Super Bowl in his first year as 49ers head coach.  Ironically, the last rookie head coach to go to the Super Bowl was former 49ers coach George Seifart [...]

Jim Harbaugh: Giants are a Scary Opponent

San Francisco 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh typically doesn’t root for other NFL teams,  but this week was different as he pulled for  the New York Giants to beat the Green Bay Packers during Sunday’s divisional round. “I never really root,” Harbaugh said. “It feels like one of those things — be careful what you wish for. Just watch the two teams play, and if I ever...

Credit to Eli Manning was overdue

Being both a big mouth and a football-obsessed member of the media for 18 years, I have spent a fair amount of time trying to figure things out in the NFL. Over 3,100 episodes of the Bob and Dan show since 1999 on Sportsradio 1310 the Ticket on Dallas airwaves at three hours per show has put us dangerously close to the Malcolm Gladwell "10,000" hour rule. That rule argues...

Eli Manning misses New York Giants practice

Eli Manning started practice on Wednesday with the New York Giants but had to leave the field before he was able to complete the entire practice. Manning departed as head coach Tom Coughlin told the media that Manning was suffering from a stomach virus. Coughlin told reporters, “Hopefully it’s just a 24-hour deal and he’ll feel better.” Only two practice remain...

Sick Eli misses part of Giants practice

New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning missed part of Wednesday's practice session with a stomach illness. Coach Tom Coughlin calls it ''a stomach bug, hopefully a 24-hour deal.'' Archie: Peyton wants to stay

Archie is certainly willing to talk and this week he says his son wants to remain in Indy: “Peyton kind of likes his roots in Indy,” Archie Manning said yesterday after watching his youngest son, Eli Manning, lead the Giants to a 37-20 Divisional victory over the Packers at Lambeau Field. “We’ll see what happens there. If that doesn’t work and he can get healthy we’ll...

GFB’s Giants-Packers Predictions: Don’t Blink, You Might Miss Something

Giants-49ers NFC Championship Game Matchup Features Tale of Two #1′s: Eli Manning and Alex Smith

The 15-1 Green Bay Packers (who peaked in September-November)  have indeed been exited from the NFL Playoffs by the New York Giants (who are peaking now), and Hakeem Nicks was indeed wide open on an end-of-half Hail Mary. So much for the Green Bay dynasty; as former GM Ron Wolf would say, the 2011 Packers proved to be just a fart in the wind. Deal with it. The silver lining is...

New York Giants: Five Similarities Between This Team and 2007

Shale BriskinBGB ContributorNow that the New York Giants have upset the Super Bowl favorite Green Bay Packers, many comparisons are being drawn between this team and the team that won Super Bowl XLII over the Patriots, which was also in upset fashion. The coaching staff and most of the player personnel between the two teams are very similar and this current group of Giants looks...

Defense Still Wins Championships

The year of the quarterback: fans thought 2009 was that season with ten quarterbacks amassing 4,000 yards or more. QB’s such as Peyton Manning, Tom Brady and Drew Brees made it look easy, dropping balls into places where they’d never been before. Even QB Kyle Orton, who seemingly couldn’t throw the ball effectively downfield, passed for 3,802 yards in 2009. But quarterback...
