A look into the wide receiver free agency market

Last year Seattle made a big splash when they signed Sidney Rice to a 5 year $41 million dollar contract.

They were also able to add Doug Baldwin as an un-drafted free agent and we all know how great that has turned out. Because of these two moves last off season I would not expect Seattle to make any big moves at this position.

One would think the Seattle Seahawks have to be active March 13th.

Here’s how I see WR shaping up for 2012.

Currently on the Roster: Sidney Rice (WR1)

Sidney Rice is a 25 year old receiver who has the ability to make the tough catch look routine. When healthy he demands respect from the opposing teams and forces them to rotate coverage to his side. Sidney has 2,613 career yards with his 178 receptions (14.7 per) in 57 games (45.8 yards/game and 3.1 receptions/game)

Golden Tate (WR2)

Golden Tate is a 23 year old receiver with 2 years experience. He took strides during his second season learning that the game is about more then the physical gifts he has been given. Tate has 609 yards with his 56 receptions (10.9 per) in 27 games (22.6 yards/game and 2.1 receptions/game).

Doug Baldwin (WR3)

Doug Baldwin is a 23 year old receiver coming off a rookie year where he took the NFL by storm. Baldwin gained 788 yards on 51 receptions (15.5 per) in his 16 game (49.3 yards/game and 3.2 receptions/game) rookie campaign.

Mike Williams (WR2)

Mike Williams is a 28 year old receiver who struggled last season even before being placed on injured reserve. His struggles were in part due to having a quarterback who didn’t understand how to utilize him and partly because he was being lazy and only running on his routes part time.

Williams could be released before the start of the season even if he receives his $250,000 roster bonus from the Seahawks.

Mike has 1,526 yards on 127 receptions (12.0 yards per) in 56 games (27.3 yards/game and 2.3 receptions/game).

Ben Obomanu (WR1)

Ben Obomanu is a 28 year old receiver that had high expectations but I believe he has maxed out. He’s solid as a back up or as a 4th receiver. Ben has 1,151 yards with his 83 receptions (13.9 yards per) in 58 games (19.8 yards/game and 1.4 receptions/game).

Deon Butler (WR3)

Deon Butler is a 26 year old receiver who was able to come back after suffering a devastating broken leg towards the end of the 2010 season.  Butler has 611 yards on 57 receptions (10.7 yards per) in 34 games (18 yards/game and 1.7 receptions/game).

Kris Durham

23 year old who played in 3 games, had 3 receptions for 30 yards during his rookie season before being placed on injured reserve with a torn labrum that needed surgery.

Ricardo Lockett

25 year old burner who is a big play threat. He only caught two balls in his extremely limited playing time (2 games). Ricardo averaged 52.5 yards per reception.

Williams could be released before the start of the season.

Charly Martin

27 year old receiver with 1 career reception.

The Seahawks will not look to make a huge splash here but could look to upgrade the depth of the 5th or 6th player on the roster at this position. There are a handful of receivers I would love to add here but money is better spent elsewhere.

Love’ em

Mario Manningham

A 25 year old speedster who’s numbers were down last year while battling injury. 2,315 yards on 160 receptions (14.5 yards per) in 49 games (47.2 yards/game and 3.3 receptions/game).

Mario would be an instant upgrade at the Wr2 position over Mike Williams and Golden Tate. He does have an issue with dropping the ball but he also has the ability to make big time catches in big time games.

Hate’ em

Dwayne Bowe

A 27 years old with 5 years experience. 4,927 yards on 356 receptions (13.8 yards per) in 75 games (65.7 yards/game and 4.7 receptions/game).

Bowe would be an outstanding addition to the Seahawks receiving corps but Sidney Rice‘s contract makes this improbable.

Vincent Jackson

A 29 year old malcontent with 7 years experience. 4,754 yards on 272 receptions (17.5 yards per) in 92 games (51.7 yards/game and 3 receptions/game).

Jackson is a talented receiver with amazing big play ability but his attitude is not worth his performance on the field.

Marques Colston

A 28 year old receiver who puts up big numbers in a pass happy offense with 6 years experience. 6,240 yards on 449 receptions (13.9 yards per) in 86 games(72.6 yards/game and 5.2 receptions/game).

I like the guy but not only will he be too expensive with Rice’s contract I am not sure he fits Seattle’s system.

Reggie Wayne

The only thing that needs to be said is that he is ging to follow Peyton Manning wherever he goes and the team will be more than happy to have him if for no other reason than to teach that teams receivers how to play Manning’s offense and run the routes the way Peyton likes.

Pierre Garcon – Very similar to Mario Manningham only he drops the big time passes during big time moments.
