Conventional wisdom says the San Francisco 49ers need a quarterback and will select one when they pick 7th overall in Thursdays first round of the 2011 NFL draft. After the failed Alex Smith experiment they are left with a void at signal caller---unless of course you believe David Carr is the answer.
The Niners may believe that. It also sounds like GM Trent Balke has some concerns about not getting it right with a QB as high as seven----it is a high risk pick:
"If you have the DNA of a quarterback, you have the ability to figure things out," he said. "I don't think there's any one way to know if a guy's going to be a Pro Bowl quarterback, even a starting quarterback. There's a lot of factors, and I'm not professing to have all the answers. You do the best you can and you try to evaluate the quarterback like you do any other position."
There are likely to be some high impact defensive players at seven, such as linebacker Von Miller. ...
