It's Always Sunny in Detroit:
No fan, teammate or front office employee should want their team’s athletes not to aim for the highest team goal in their sport. To strive for anything else would be cheating your teammates, fans, city and yourself. But, just because an athlete has confidence in himself and his team doesn’t mean he needs to go making bold (in this case VERY bold) statements.
Nick Fairley put the confidence to print in a recent interview with the Detroit News.
“I expect big things. I am going to say we are going to the Super Bowl because I am competitive and that is what I want for the team and it is one of the goals. I am sure we are going to take it game by game and day by day.”
The Lions made some nice progress in free agency. They boosted their offense by adding running back Reggie Bush. They retained starting, oft-injured safety Louis Delmas and found him a mate in former Texans free safety Glover Quin. And of course, they drafted Ziggy Ansah with the fifth overall pick in the draft to bolster the pass rush.
But keep in mind that the Lions went 4-12 last season. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, only one team (the 1999 St. Louis Rams) has won a Super Bowl after winning four or fewer games the previous season. And while Fairley has shown improvement, he recorded 5.5 sacks in 13 games last year. He missed three with a shoulder injury. Also keep in mind that the Lions are one of four teams (the Texans, Jags and Browns are the others) to have never played in a Super Bowl. That doesn’t mean that they never will, but Vegas has them at 60/1 odds for next season.
Nick, if you’re interested in putting your first round paycheck where your mouth is, I promise I won’t tell anyone.

No pain, no gain, right?
Part of being a NFL player is playing through injuries. At least that's the perception. The unwritten rule is that you suck it up and do everything you can to stay on the field.
But does that type of mentality sometimes become a detriment for both the player and the team?
