Since Randy Moss departure, the Patriots really haven’t had a legitimate deep threat, a receiver to stretch the field and make opposing safeties play honest.
When asked about that during a conference call today, and how much not having a deep threat has hindered Tom Brady and the offense, we received an interesting answer from offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien. He completely disagreed with the premise.
”I don’t really agree with that,” O’Brien said. ”I think we have guys that can stretch the field, we have guys that are good vertical receivers, some guys that do a little bit of both, intermediate receivers, short receivers, as far as short area and zones are concerned. So I don’t necessarily agree with that. I just think again, we have to do a better job of coaching, playing, and go out there and show what we’re capable of doing, and hopefully we do that this week.” (more…)
