Thank God football returns.  Dallas @ Minnesota left a bad taste in the mouth of Cowboys fans across the world.  It has been a productive 6 months for the Cowboys.  They drafted a WR and LB of the future and they cut “dead weight” in Flozell Adams and Ken Hamlin.  Otherwise it was a rather quiet off-season.

Now that training camp has begun, there will be a large amount of stories detailing the individual success of players, who may or may not make the team, and which young talent is pushing veterans for starting time.  Some of these stories don’t amount to much.  Woody Dantzler, Keon Lattimore, and Jesse Holly may get an inordinate amount of attention during training camp, but most players of this line don’t make their mark on the field.

One exception is Tony Romo.  The Summer of 2003 the Cowboys traded a 3rd round pick for the quarterback of the future, Drew Henson.  Henson would learn at the feet of Quincy Carter and Vinnie Testeverde.  Early reports indicated that Carter was not only grasping the offense, but was making great strides coming off of his playoff caliber performance the year prior.  Around the same time, fans were hungry for any information regarding the Henson.  After reports about Henson’s strong arm, and his quick acclimation after years in baseball, there was a brief sidenote.  Romo was impressing the coaching staff with his athleticism and quick release.

Fast forward a week, Carter was cut, and Romo was installed as the 3rd QB.  Eventually he would supplant Henson as the backup quarterback.  The rest is better documented history.

One other story line that I hope we do not see is the injury story.  Already we have learned that Martellus Bennett will start training camp on the non-football related injury list.  Along with Akwasi Owusu-Ansah who is still recovering from his shoulder injury, there will be some manageable injuries.  Injury stories will be the only ones that can derail an entire season.

I would trade a boring pre-season for zero injuries.
