After a stunning debut last week against the Chicago Bears, San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick showed the NFL world what he is capable of doing on the field. After the game, head coach Jim Harbaugh was asked by reporters if the starting quarterback position would be given back to Alex Smith when he was medically cleared after suffering a concussion. Harbaugh responded by simply stating that the team would go with the hot hand, and that the team currently has two hot hands at the position. Maybe Harbaugh could think about a career in politics when his coaching gig is finished. Harbaugh has not officially named a starter for the Niners this week although many reports swirling in the media suggest Kaepernick will get his second career start. Again on Saturday, Harbaugh declined to name a starter. From the Niners website, “We feel like there’s no competitive advantage for us to release that information for our organization and our team. Like any position, we don’t get into what the...

Do the 49ers have a QB controversy? Week 12 preview.

I think Jim Harbaugh has seen Kaepernick at practice the last two years and has been itching to get him into a game.  Last week Harbaugh's expectations were met or exceeded and he's ready to move on.  I don't think Smith gets back on the field this season. After going a red hot 13-1 in week 11, I went 2-1 on Thanksgiving day.  For the season that makes it 106-57....

Jim Harbaugh Is Ironically Benching Alex Smith on Thanksgiving After Once Defending Him Against ‘Jive-Turkey Gobblers’

For 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh, letting Alex Smith sit another week and giving the San Francisco starting job to youngster Colin Kaepernick was probably just good football sense. But considering Harbaugh made the decision on the eve of Thanksgiving, the situation has become more interesting. Smith, after all, is the quarterback that Harbaugh defended earlier this season against those...

Niners sting Saints with convincing 31-21 win

With Colin Kaepernick again effectively leading the offense and a defense that got downright offensive on its own, the 49ers were simply too much for a hot New Orleans team on Sunday afternoon, taking control after halftime on the way to a convincing 31-21 victory over the Saints at the Superdome.

Kaepernick to start for 49ers

As most of the pregame buildup indicated, San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick will make his second consecutive start in New Orleans on Sunday. Multiple reports Sunday morning said Kaepernick is the starter over Alex Smith, who was limited most of last week and didn't play in Monday's 32-7 win over the Chicago Bears. Smith, sidelined with a concussion in...

Smith active for 49ers, but Kaepernick starts

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Alex Smith, sidelined since Nov. 11 with a concussion, was cleared to play today against the New Orleans Saints in the Superdome, but Colin Kaepernick is the starter. It will be the second start for Kaepernick, the second-year player out of Nevada, who helped demolish the Chicago Bears Monday night, 32-7. Smith is the only other active quarterback...

49ers use Kaepernick, defense to top Saints 31-21

Dashon Goldson turned Marques Colston upside down just as the receiver leaped for a pass over the middle. As Colston landed on his head and lay motionless for several seconds, safety Donte Whitner snagged the deflected pass on New Orleans 42 and weaved his way past Drew Brees and Co., all the way to the end zone. That was but one of the big plays turned in by a San Francisco defense...

Vernon Davis: 'Alex is still our guy'

Even though Colin Kaepernick led the 49ers to a win over the Saints, tight end Vernon Davis nevertheless voiced his support for benched starter Alex Smith.

This Is Not A QB Controversy In San Francisco!

Alex Smith suffered a concussion and was taken out of the game in Week 10 versus the St. Louis Rams, which ended in a 24-24 tie. Backup QB Colin Kaepernick came into that game in relief duty and played decently, completing 11 of 17 for 117 YDS. He also rushed 8 times for 66 YDS and scored a touchdown. These are pretty good numbers considering that his previous work in this...
