Not So Special Teams

It is absolutely frustrating as an Eagles fan to watch the defense play exceptional, the offense play good enough, and still not come out on top with a win. But, that is the consequence when special teams muffs two punts, one for an incredible touchdown. Perhaps it is unfair to blame the whole unit for the lost. It was Greg Lewis and J.R. Reed who can't learn when to make a play or let it bounce. I have less of an issue with Lewis's mistake because he has no real experience at the punt returner. I will attribute that to the coaching staff. J.R. Reed has no excuse. Why was he trying to make a play on that ball? Inexcusable. Otherwise, two forced fumbles (one recovered) and an interception by the defense was a good start to the season. The run defense also looks improved from last season. It seemed that Brandon Jackson had few runs longer than four yards. Had it not been for the inability of some of the guys on the line to finish tackles on Favre, I would say the defense was exceptional. Some credit is due to Sean Considine. I was not very optimistic about him starting this season, but he definitely proved his worth today. The offense was pretty shaky. Not horrible considering Donovan's first game back and L.J. Smith is still very uncertain. Brian Westbrook was very effective running the ball today. I was surprised they did not try to make more plays with him in the open field on screens or outs. Other guys to mention...Jason Avant played pretty good (watch the roundhouse kicks) .But again, they were good enough to win today. I am still confident about this season. And look forward to the Redskins at home next week.

  • Maybe Donovan should have completed more passes...
  • That plus the recievers should have dropped less passes....

Totally agree btw, inexcusable is the perfect word. We're still going to be awesome but the special teams today was a joke.
  • I'm not sure this was a true test for the defense, the Packers have limited weapons. The special teams were a concern all pre season and it really looked even worse yesterday. I thought that the Eagles only threw out of the Shotgun, and everytime McNabb was under center they ran. It seemed to predictable. Maybe his plant foot on his drops is a concern still?
  • That is a really good observation about McNabb not taking the ball under center. It makes a lot of sense come to think of it.
  • I'm sorry but as a football player aren't you taught basic punt return fundamentals from pee wee football all the way to the pros? J.R. Reed and Greg Lewis are idiots plain and simple. With the game on the line J.R. Reed showed he has no brains whatsoever. When I played football everyone would yell
  • Nevertheless, you can be taught how to receive kicks/punts in pop warner, but taking punts, like anything else in sports, is learned and perfected by repetitive training. In the case of Greg Lewis, he wasn't taking kicks in preseason (to the best of my knowledge). Unfortunately, Jeremy Bloom, who was taking most of the kicks by the end of preseason, injured his toe right before the last cuts and failed to make the squad.

However, I agree with you about J.R. Reed. He has no excuse in the entire world. Dude has fielded way too many kicks in the NFL to dive at balls. I have no doubts they will address these concerns by next week against the Redskins.
  • After having been cut by the Giants J.R. seemed to be still in preseason mode trying to make the squad if you will with an uncalled for extra hustle. I doubt he will make the same mistake again, but as I mentioned in another article here, I wouldn't be surprised if the Eagles pick up one of those guys the Chiefs cut provided they aren't signed to any practice squad.
