The Oakland Raiders franchise went through a lot in 2011. Here’s a look at the top 5 stories that have surrounded Oakland over the past 365 days.

Passing of Al Davis
Long time Raider coach, owner and GM Al Davis passed away on October 8th of this year at the age of 82. Davis’ death was disclosed as heart failure. This affected many people around the league from people in the Raiders organization to coaches to John Madden.

Hue Jackson took over as head coach of the franchise as they had to play in an emotional game against the Houston Texans only a day after Davis’ death. An interception in the endzone on the final play of the game sealed it for Oakland; however they only had 10 men on the field for that play. Coach Jackson said after the game that Davis “had his hand on that ball”.

Taking Terrelle Pryor in Supplemental Draft
On August 22nd 2011, the Raiders selected former Ohio State QB Terrelle Pryor in the 3rd round of the NFL’s supplemental draft. Just days later, both sides agreed to a 4 year contract.

There were no other players taken in 2011’s supplemental draft. The Raiders will now have to forfeit their 3rd round pick in the 2012 draft.
Pryor saw his first NFL action when he lined up at WR in a game against the Kansas City Chiefs on October 23rd.

Trade for Carson Palmer
On October 18th the Raiders acquired “retired” QB Carson Palmer from the Cincinnati Bengals. The move happened after then QB Jason Campbell suffered a broken collarbone.

Oakland gave up their first round pick in 2012 and a conditional 2nd round pick in 2013 (which turns into a first if they make it to an AFC title game in the next two years) for him and they will be looking for him to take over the franchise for a few years.

Bush rises as McFadden falls
After a season that saw RB Darren McFadden put up over 1100 yards for the Raiders, many figured they were in good hands going in to this season. That was until week 7, when McFadden left the game due to injury, rushing for only 4 yards on 2 carries.

McFadden hasn’t played a game since, and has been replaced by Michael Bush. Since the injury, Bush has run the ball 194 times for 773 yards (4 YPC) and 4 TD. When McFadden returns, Raiders fans will have something to be excited about, knowing they’ll have two quality runners in the backfield.

Rolando McClain arrested on gun charges
On December 1st Raiders LB Rolando McClain was arrested on misdemeanor assault, firearms and other charges as police said he fired a gun during a fight in his hometown, Alabama.

McClain was released on a $2000 bond and played the next week at Miami.

The Raiders certainly had an interesting year in 2011 and there’s certainly no predicting what will happen with this team in 2012.
