After getting Khalil Mack in the first round, the Oakland Raiders followed it up with two outstanding picsk in the second and third rounds. With the 36th overall pick, the Raiders picked Derek Carr, quarterback from Fresno State. Throughout the pre-draft process, the Raiders expressed a lot of interest in Carr, and had him rated as their top QB. After the Texans and Cowboys bypassed a QB, Oakland was left in another great spot to get the player they wanted. Derek Carr: future franchise QB for Oakland? In his final year at Fresno State, Carr threw for 5,083 yards and 50 touchdowns. As explained before, he won’t replicate those numbers in the NFL, but he is an impressive passer. Carr won’t be handed the job. Matt Schaub is the outright starter now, and Carr wil have to beat out McGloin as well to even get no. 2 duties, but Reggie McKenzie and the Raiders could see Carr as the QB of the future. The Raiders continued their great draft in the third round, selecting Mississippi State G Gabe Jackson with the 81st overall pick after trading down. Jackson is a powerful guard who can stop a defender’s momentum. Gabe Jackson Jackson, if he shows well in OTAs and training camp, can easily take the left guard job, which is a currently a cluster bomb of mediocre players. Jackson has been rated as one of the top guards in the draft by many analysts, and was projected into about the third round. He is a top notch pass protector, but lacks a nasty streak that his size would suggest. So after two days, the Raiders came out with the second best defender in the class, the fourth best quarterback, and a top-5 guard. Reggie McKenzie is beginning to soundly make a statement to keep his job, even if the team fails to get above five wins. Day 3 reaction will come as soon as all undrafted free agent signings are finalized The post Oakland Raiders: 2nd day draft reaction appeared first on isportsweb.
