On the second day of the 2012 Oakland Raiders training camp, quarterback Carson Palmer is adapting well to the demands of the new offensive system that includes the ability to move inside and outside of the pocket to deliver throws. The benefit of a full offseason is showing what he is capable of this season.

“I think he’s doing exceptional,” Raiders head coach Dennis Allen said. “I think he’s got full command of the offense and I think he’s done a nice job of running it. You can’t win in this league on a consistent basis without a quarterback and we feel good about the one we’ve got.”

Until the pads go on tomorrow, the defense is at a disadvantage. However, some players were able to stand out. Cornerback DeMarcus Van **** put together his second straight solid practice with more pass break-ups. The offseason work he has done is showing in his development. Safety Mike Mitchell intercepted a Carson Palmer pass and returned it for a touchdown, while rookie linebacker Miles Burris, who is filling in for injured Aaron Curry, was in position, but let an interception through his hands.

“Yeah, we made a few plays,” Allen said of the defense. “I think coaches are all perfectionists, so it’s never what you want. Kind of reserve judgment until we get a chance to watch the tape. It was nice to see us make a few plays. Mike Mitchell made a nice play on the interception so that was good to see.”

The same players that sat out practice yesterday again missed today's session. Curry (knee), Travis Ivey (conditioning), Ron Bartell (hamstring), and Shane Lechler (knee) are all still rehabbing injuries. Tight end Richard Gordon (hip) and running back Mike Goodson (hamstring) did not finish practice.

“Update on the injuries,” Allen said. “Obviously, same guys as yesterday. Goodson went down with a hamstring today and Richard Gordon went down with a hip flexor today. We’ll keep evaluating those guys, let you know on a day to day basis where they’re at but those are the updates on the injuries.”

As for the wide receivers, Jacoby Ford was back at practice after an injury scare yesterday and made a nice catch over the middle from Palmer and a diving catch on the sideline. Rookie Juron Criner, who had limited reps with the third team yesterday, received some first team looks today.

Allen also stopped practice at one point to gather the players and tell them what he expects as far as execution and refocus the team on practicing at their best.

“Today I felt it was necessary to bring them all in together, let them know what I was observing and give them a chance to get it corrected,” Allen said. “I thought they did a pretty nice job of responding.”

Tomorrow the Raiders go full pads and contact for the first time since week 17 of last season against the San Diego Chargers.
