Bloguin's scouting site Optimum Scouting is going through the NFL divisions and taking a look at team needs. The most recent was the NFC South which of course includes our Atlanta Falcons. They've got our primary needs as defensive end, tight end and linebacker with a secondary need at running back. I can't disagree with that assessment but those needs could drastically change depending on what happens in free agency. If somehow Tony Gonzalez comes back then that will cross tight end off the list. On the flip side, if William Moore tests the market and doesn't come back then safety becomes a huge concern. In terms of linebacker play, I thought Sean Weatherspoon and Stephen Nicholas both had very good years (for the record I don't agree with the overall assessment of Nicholas in the OS article but he was very weak in pass coverage) and I thought Akeem Dent started to play a lot better towards the end of the year. But there isn't a whole lot of talent behind them and I would like to see us expand our ability to use some of our linebacker corps off the bench as the situation dictates. It's easier said then done but in a perfect world I would like to see us add two linebackers (whether it's in free agency or via the draft). One that is a quicker backer that has the ability to cover the tight end and one that is a hybrid OLB/DE type that Mike Nolan can move around like he did this past season with Kroy Biermann. We simply need guys, regardless of position, that can get after the QB and we need our backers to be better in pass coverage.
