GREEN BAY, Wis. -- With depth and experience along the offensive line becoming an issue as injuries continueto pileup, the Green Bay Packers signed 31-year-old veteran Reggie Wells. Wells was a starter for six consecutive seasons with the Arizona Cardinals from 2004 to 2009. A sixth-round pick of the Cardinals in 2003, Wells appeared in eight games with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2010 and in five games with the Carolina Panthers last season. Wells has mainly been a left guard throughout his career, starting 79 games at that position. He also started 10 games at right tackle and two games at left tackle during his career. Two of the Packers' injured offensive linemen were part of four total roster moves announced by general manager Ted Thompson late Wednesday night. Mike McCabe, an offensive tackle who signed with Green Bay on May 11 as an undrafted free agent out of Holy Cross, was placed on injured reserve. McCabe injured his hip early in training camp, though coach Mike McCarthy had yet to give a status update on him beyond that. Also, the Packers placed offensive guard Jaymes Brooks on the reserve physically unable to perform list. Brooks, an undrafted free agent signing from Virginia Tech, had yet to practice during training camp due to a hamstring injury. For the second opening on the roster created by those moves, Green Bay claimed wide receiver Andy Brewer off waivers from the Philadelphia Eagles. Brewer becomes the 12th receiver on the Packers' training camp roster, equating to 13 percent of the 90-man group. Brewer, 25, is also the third wide receiver on the team with a history of playing quarterback in college. Like Randall Cobb at Kentucky and Diondre Borel at Utah State, Brewer played quarterback at Northwestern. After one season at quarterback in the Big Ten, Brewer moved to wide receiver, and, in 2009, set the school's single-season record with a 16.2 yards-per-catch average. Brewer played last season with the Omaha Nighthawks of the United Football League. Follow Paul Imig on Twitter.
