Green Bay Packers
New Orleans Saints
GREEN BAY, Wis. It continues to be a busy week for Green Bay Packers general manager Ted Thompson. One day after signing free agent running back Cedric Benson, the Packers have agreed to a four-year contract extension with starting left guard T.J. Lang.
The deal was announced on Twitter by Lang's agent, Mike McCartney.
Soon after, Lang sent out a message of his own.
"Thanks for all the love!," Lang posted on Twitter. "I'm beyond excited to be staying home for another 4 years. Pack nation I won't let you down!"
Lang, a fourth-round pick by Green Bay in 2009, was set to become an unrestricted free agent after this season. He is now set to stay with the Packers through 2016.
Lang became a full-time starter for the first time last season, beating out 2011 first-round pick Derek Sherrod, who is more suited for an offensive tackle position.
According to the ratings on ProFootballFocus.com, Lang was the 10th-best offensive guard in the NFL last season in pass protection. With starting right guard Josh Sitton performing at an elite level, Lang was actually the second-ranked guard on Green Bay's offensive line.
Lang was not as good in run blocking, however, ranking 47th in the league among guards.
This is just one of several contract extensions that Thompson will have to look into this season for players on the Packers' roster. Two-time Pro Bowl wide receiver Greg Jennings will be an unrestricted free agent after this season, plus the contracts of linebacker Clay Matthews and nose tackle B.J. Raji expire after next season.
Most importantly, MVP quarterback Aaron Rodgers has three years left on a contract that doesn't have him among the top-five paid players at his position. Considering the five-year, 100 million extension that Saints quarterback Drew Brees recently signed, Rodgers will likely not wait until the end of his current deal to negotiate an extension of his own.

I don’t normally criticize things the Packers do, but this really seems like the Packers are buying high. Lang only has one year of starting experience and it’s not like he was an elite guard or anything last year. Making 15 starts, including playoffs, he graded out as ProFootballFocus’ 19th ranked guard. He’s better in pass protection, where he ranked 6th at his position...
GREEN BAY, Wis. It's been more than two weeks since the Green Bay Packers held their first training camp practice of the 2012 season. The way the team lined up on Day 1 looks quite different than it does now, less than one month before the regular season kicks off.
The movement on the Packers' depth chart is based on a combination of injuries, player improvement or decline...
Green Bay Packers second-year cornerback Davon House is out two to three weeks with a separated left shoulder, the Green Bay Press-Gazette reported Sunday. Packers coach Mike McCarthy said House will rehab the shoulder before deciding whether he can return to the field or need surgery. House was in line to start at one of the starting spots before the injury happened during a...
Rookie quarterback B.J. Coleman has all the physical tools needed to play in the NFL
The Green Bay Packers haven’t opened a regular season with three quarterbacks on the roster since 2008, but that could change come September. If seventh-round draft pick B.J. Coleman continues to develop, there’s a chance he could join starter Aaron Rodgers and backup Graham Harrell on the final...
Green Bay halfback back James Starks is suffering from turf toe and his status is considered "week-to-week."Fantasy Spin:Second-stringer Brandon Saine is out with a hamstring injury and Alex Green has been dealing with knee issues, so right now the Packers are looking pretty banged up at running back. All of that is good news for Cedric Benson, who signed with the Packers...
Chanting Green Bay Packer fans could be heard throughout Qualcomm Stadium on Thursday, even over the booing of the home crowd. All the support of their fans however, was not enough for them to secure a win. The Packers may have lost their season opener to the Chargers, but preseason games are the closest you [...]
New running back Cedric Benson arrives with questions about his hefty career workload, ball security and off-the-field issues. Nonetheless, the Packers went with Benson over Ryan Grant.

One of the most important skills that an NFL running back must learn is how to pass protect and pick up the blitz in order to keep their quarterback upright.
The reason the Green Bay Packers ended up having to sign free agent Cedric Benson is because it became clear to them that James Starks wasn’t going to give them much more in terms of on the field production and he...
Bad news, Zooey Deschanel.
The Pack was an awe-inspiring juggernaut through the regular season last year, save for one unfortunate run-in with Kyle Orton and Romeo Crennel’s defense. Recent history, however, is not kind to the team that finishes with the best regular season record in the NFL and so too was it unkind to the Packers, who were beaten quite decisively in the divisional...
