The Patriots are moving in a new offensive direction. Wes Welker is now officially on his way to join the Denver Broncos, meaning the Patriots need a new weapon in the slot. That guy appears to be St. Louis Rams receiver Danny Amendola. Amendola, who was productive in the slot for the Rams over the past four seasons, has been in contact with the Patriots already, according to Adam Schefter. The Patriots reached out to him during the three-day negotiating window that began last Friday night, indicating interest in the receiver. Welker’s production over his six-year Patriots career won’t be matched by many, or maybe any, players across the league, considering he  became the first receiver to catch 100 passes or more in five or more seasons. Amendola would be a good option, though, as he is a few inches taller than the diminutive Welker and is just as effective a route runner. Amendola does have some health concerns after missing 20 games over the past two seasons, but his production does make him an intriguing replacement. In 11 games last season, Amendola caught 63 passes for 666 yards and three touchdowns, which extended over and entire season would get him near the 100-catch, 1,000-yard marks that Welker typically produced. There is still speculation out there that given the low-value market for slot receivers, Amendola might return to the Rams. But there is definitely a level of interest and with Brandon Lloyd now the only experienced receiver on the roster, the Patriots will have to load up and fast. Have a question for Luke Hughes?
