New England Patriots director of player personnel Nick Caserio spoke to the media Monday, and covered a few subjects pre-draft. Caserio is in the final stages of finalizing the Patriots draft board, and what their strategy is after the draft as well. He explains that it is a process like many other facets of building a team; he also touched on the strength of the draft in which he feels is defensive back. According to Paul Kenyon of the Providence Journal, Caserio and company feel that what isn’t done through the draft can be done before training camp. “I think the draft is a part of the process. Really, the team-building exercise, it kind of never stops,” he said. “It’s ongoing. It’s just specific to one segment of the year. Most of the time, free agency comes before the draft. We had one instance where it didn’t. The team-building process is nonstop, it’s ongoing, and once we get post-draft, there will be a period during training camp, like Rob Ninkovich, just to pick a name. I think we signed him in August 2009 in training camp. And Rob has ended up being one of the better players that we’ve had in our program.” On the strength of the draft: “I think one of the things that’s probably unique about that position is that you’ve seen a few more players that have actually played multiple positions. Some have played safety, some have played corner, some have played a nickel position like the Matt Elam kid,” he said. “There are versatile players in the defensive backfield position that are not necessarily confined to one particular spot. ... I think there’s some depth and some versatility at that position.”
