The Patriots announced more additions and movements with their coaching staff for the upcoming (is it?) 2011 season. Last week, the Patriots promoted Bill O’Brien to offensive coordinator, moved Matt Patricia from linebackers coach to safeties coach, moved defensive assistant Patrick Graham to linebackers coach, and lost strength and conditioning coach Mike Woicik to the Dallas Cowboys. First, the Pats promoted assistant strength and conditioning Harold Nash to Woicik’s position as the head strength and conditioning coach. Nash has long been lauded by players as an excellent coach and he has won awards for his player development program.
The Patriots’ next move was another in-house promotion. The team promoted offensive assistant Brian Ferentz, son of Iowa head coach Kirk Ferentz, to tight ends coach. Brian Ferentz will be a coach to watch over the next few years. He is young (27) and has the bloodline of a head coach. He is a coach that could continue to rise up the ranks of the staff, much like Josh McDaniels, Eric Mangini, and Bill O’Brien have done.
Finally, the Patriots hired University of Central Florida running backs coach George Godsey as an offensive assistant. Godsey had also served as a quarterbacks coach at UCF.
Could a defensive coordinator come next, or will Bill Belichick continue to assume that role?
